Hello!
I’m Becky and I started geocaching on Saturday. I love it!! I use a Garmin Geko 101 and have had great results. I’ve only been to 2 easier caches so far, but I look forward to really getting into this.
I really want to include my dogs in these adventures. I took my terrier with me Saturday to Wild Turkey Roost and my greyhound came along to At The Church (it was a bit too cold for him!) Are there any caches near me that are not dog-friendly? I’m doing this alone, so having a dog with me makes me feel a little more comfortable (although neither is too tough!)
Feel free to let me know anything you want about geocaching!
Thanks!
Bec01/19/2004 at 5:00 am #1746181Welcome, Bec. I don’t have a dog, but I know that many Wisconsin geocachers who hide caches list whether or not dogs are permitted at the location, so you may want to read the cache description carefully to see what it says there. Welcome to geocaching, and especially to the WGA. We hope to see you at an upcoming breakfast or caching event.
01/19/2004 at 12:43 pm #1746182Welcome to geocaching!
A quick email to any of the owners should get you a fairly quick response on whether dogs are allowed or not. In Janesville, dogs are allowed in the parks from September 15 through May 15. There are special dog exercise areas (of which there are three caches in now) in Janesville where they are welcome year-round.
Other close areas to you – Kettle Moraine Southern Unit where some areas allow them and some don’t, it is usually best to check with the owners.
Goodluck and we all look forward to having someone from Fort Atkinson involved in geocaching.01/19/2004 at 6:30 pm #1746183Thanks for making me feel welcome! I’m trying to decide if I want to go outside this afternoon and find another cache (it’s so cold! But I think I will.)
I was wondering if anyone had put caches in dog parks — I thought that was a neat idea.
Thanks for the info. Hope I get to see you at events as well!

01/19/2004 at 6:47 pm #1746184Welcome Becky!
Well, if you don’t have any plans for Saturday, you could very well meet lots of us at an event!
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=108083I personally don’t have a dog, so I haven’t really taken notice about dog parks or not…. I’ve only done 15 caches so far, and I’ve come across people walking their dogs on most of them! (Or is it dogs walking their people? I suppose it depends…. Anyhow…)
Glad you could join us!

01/19/2004 at 7:10 pm #1746185Saw you walking toward Turkey Roost on Saturday! Debbie thought she saw the distinctive yellow of the garmin. Welcome to geocaching. My wife and I have been doing this since October and are enjoying geocaching immensely. You’ll find that most, if not all, of the caches in the Fort area are pet friendly although some parks require leashes for dogs. Right now the weather and cold is of a much greater concern. Hope your animals have thick coats!
01/19/2004 at 10:29 pm #1746186Hi Grumbleberies! Did you see me before or after my first fall? I’m not the best on ice (broke a kneecap about 10 years ago) so I’ve got to remember to be very cautious! I’m really impressed with the number of caches in the area (and the state!)
Both my dogs are short haired (a greyhound and a small terrier) but we have winter clothing for them, and I won’t take them on really cold days. But both love exploring, so it’ll be fun!
I don’t believe I’m working this Saturday, so I might just be coming out to the caching event.
Just found a couple more today — this is so much fun!

01/20/2004 at 1:13 am #1746187Wicket, the geocaching dog and I were out doing some cache maintenance in New Glarus on Saturday and then caching by Janesville and Cambridge on Sunday. He loves the hikes! And he’s gettin’ better at smelling out tupperware, too (kidding). See Wicket at my profile gallery or at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=15110
~Cachew01/20/2004 at 3:42 am #1746188I saw Wicket’s picture — what a cutie! And a nice coat for colder weather trekking. I posted a picture of my little dog (Peanut) at The Tick TB page. She went with my on my first geocache and she loved the excursion! She heard turkeys and was very intrigued.
I plan on coming to the Saturday event — as long as work doesn’t pop up. I think it will just be me, unless I can convince someone to come with me. No dogs this time. Are we to bring anything to share, food-wise? Is there any cost? Will the temporary caches locations be given out at the event, or are they posted?
It will be a little bit of a drive for me to get there (about an hour and a half) but I’m usually early. Look for the teal blue blazer with the cracked bumper (don’t ask about that!)
Oh, and what sorts of caches will they be? I want to be sure to bring along appropriate items to leave (big stuff, small stuff, etc…) It will be 10 caches, or more?
Okay, enough questions for now. Ooh, I’m getting excited!!!!!

01/20/2004 at 3:53 pm #1746189At Caching through the snow event there will be thirteen caches of a small size. As for food bring a sandwich, there will be a fire in the fireplace and Hot chocolate and coffee. The weather may bring snow (lets hope). For driving time I would say your right on, it takes me one hour from Deerfield. See you there.
01/21/2004 at 2:01 am #1746190Hi Becky,
Looking forward to meeting you at Saturday’s event. An Event Cache is a bit different in that the locations for the temporary caches are given out when you arrive. Natloh2 is making great little books for each team, and these caches will have a stamp in them to stamp on your page. These will be smaller than normal caches and will not have items for trading. They were hidden with the intention of there being snow and therefore will be rated as 1 1/2 to 2 for difficulty. Bring something for a snack or lunch and we’ll see you there.
01/22/2004 at 1:16 am #1746191Try Air Force One, GCF39A which is along a dog park near Stoughton. There were some at the Mitchell Park dog park in Brookfield near Capital Drive (hwy 190) and Barker road. It was named Barker road long before there was a dog park. I’ve scouted the dog park in Milwaukee for one but don’t get there enough so haven’t hidden one yet.
01/22/2004 at 2:11 am #1746192Here are two caches at dog runs near Janesville, stashed by that diabolical but ingenious cacher – wzbt03.

01/22/2004 at 3:55 am #1746193Oooh — geocaching and dogs, two of my favorite things!!
Are these dogs areas fenced, or not? Not that it matters much, but if I bring my greyhound (and sometimes my terrier too) he would not listen to me if taken off the lead. I’ve spent about an hour chasing him around a fenced dog park before I could finally catch him. But I love to give him the opportunity to run full speed — it’s quite a sight to behold!!
But at any rate — thanks for everone’s help!! See some of you on Saturday!
