Just started in Green Bay / Sobieski area

My wife and I just tried this Saturday for the first time and found 2 of 2 geocaches in Reforestration Camp.

Want to put one out there ourselves. Anyone know the “rules” for placing one in the Brown County Reforestration Camp. Have been reading the general rules, etc.. here and on the geocaching.com site.

Looking forward to finding these on all of our travels.

Welcome to the cult. I believe there is some kind of eclipse this Friday night, so you ‘re just in time for the sacrifice.

I just found out that it is a solar eclipse so you will be the guest of honor.

I persnonally don’t have any caches out, but in most places you will need to have permission. I believe that there is some type of generic form to use. Most of the cachers that respond in the forums have placed caches and would most likely help you out. Don’t be bashful about asking anything, it won’t be held against you.

Thanks. Will be ready for the sacrifice. Driving up to Hurley/Saxon area for the weekend and have already checked out locations of some geocaches there. I found the generic form which I will fill out and send to Brown County Parks Dept. so I can register the cache I have created.
Also ordered some tracking bugs as I have some things that want to travel the world. I guess the geocaching is limited to the Earth at this point. Maybe in a few hundred years these will be on the Moon…which will make the eclipses something more exciting. Thanks for responding.

Here is some additional info to consider:

When should a newbie place a cache?

One point of view is that any time is fine.

An opposing view is that perhaps the newbie should wait for a specific time period before doing so. That time period might be 6 months, or finding 100 caches, etc.

The object of the last point of view is to insure the newbie will still be interested, and active, in geocaching after several months.

This is probably true, but the other thing about “waiting awhile” is that you start to see the kinds of hides you like and the kinds you don’t so you know what kind of new caches you would like other cacher’s to find. You will also see how placing a geocache affects the natural surroundings in varied terrain and areas so that you can pick out the best placement for minimizing the affects on nature. Remember, these will “have your name on them” and most people want to be proud of what they create in life.

Regardless of if you heed these words on when to start placing your own new caches, don’t let anyone stop you from doing what it is you enjoy. Be it finding and/or hiding geocaches. Welcome to the hobby!

Thanks for all the advice. We are going to start doing this with our grandchildren who are from 4 weeks to 9 years. At least starting with the 9 and 7 year old grandsons. We all enjoy the woods, parks, camping, and hiking. I will keep in mind how I find other caches and see what works vs. what doesn’t work. Really interested in using the bug travelers to see how that works.

Travel bugs are fun but be aware some are bound to go missing…I actually have two that found there way to Europe and were actually within about 200 miles of each other at one point there to boot. One of my bugs has been out for 4 years and has traveled 7,000 miles; its in the Netherlands at the moment….and another has 17,000 miles and is in Ireland. Neither had a goal of going overseas but both wound up there….they can really be fun to watch.
