Welcome to the wonderful world of geocaching. My wife & I live in Prairie du Chien – as you’ve mentioned there aren’t a ton of caches hidden around here. The ones that are here are lots of fun though – one of our first adventures was a day-long trek to do the GRR series (we started in McGregor and headed south to Dubuque) – it was a lot of fun even in the winter.

Spring will be here soon and there’ll be lots of opportunity to get out and find caches – let me know if you need any “local” help around these parts.

Thanks EnergySaver, that certainly helps! Question…Do we contact our
local “cache approvers” first, before.. let’s say…get permission from the DNR or does the approver do that?

We are near Ferryville and are heading out in about an hour, down hwy 35 to see if we can find our first cache!

just come north I have one in ferry ville and just keep coming north and find a lot of new caches I personally have 50 or so caches in the la crosse area

Well our first cache expedition was a bust… According to our GPS, we were right on top of 2 of them, but they were under 3+ feet of snow!
We figured the snow was going to be a problem, but we just wanted to get a feel for the unit and how it really works. Yep.. I can see this getting addicting! Now Melt Snow!!!

Well here’s the thing…if it were easy to find EVERY cache the charm would be quick to wear off. Seeking and not finding is part of what makes this sport so much fun. There are a wide variety of hides and hiders…you should never assume because you are at the right place you will come away with a find.
I wish for you better luck on your next attempt.

The hunt is the game. We went 5 for 8 today which is ok for the snow conditions here. The last find of the day was the best micro we ever found – Waukesha Parks 6. I smiled all the way back to the suv thinking about this one, or maybe it was because now it was pizza time.

Great news! We found our 1st cache! And I’ll tell ya what…. you learn alot from your 1st one! hahahaa…at first we were waaaaayyyyy off, then we thought…no way.. it can’t be over there…. then…who the heck is going to crawl up there??? I voted for hubby….then…hey hon? Could this be it?????
It was an absolute thrill to find this first one, and of course, now we are hooked!
And in the spirit of Easter…hubby bought a bunch of those bigger plastic Easter Eggs that come apart…. and he’s going to hide them around the yard ( 6 acres) for me to find. This will help him learn to place caches more accurately and inventive… and help me learn how to navigate with the GPSr… I told him though…. if he put little miniature bottles of scotch in each one, bet I could find them alot faster!!!
Oh, and we decided we needed to invest in a couple of those aluminum hiking poles with interchangable ends after I slid down that hill in the mud and snow! hahahahaha!

Do you mean the campout in Dodgeville? Not that far from us (Ferryille), but have not been to a “meet” yet. We have a travel trailor, so we can’t camp with the group, so how the heck do we find them? Do you all have some sort of huge GeoFlag marking the spot or what…oh wait… it’s a coordinate ain’t it??? ok, I’m lost already! Ha!
