Hello from Kaukauna! My name is Kelly King, aka King54130. I was first introduced to Geocaching through a class offered at Gordon Bubolz Nature Preserve in Appleton. My family went to the class and we were hooked., but only for a short time. Fast forward several years…one day at work one of my coworkers was talking about how there was a Geocache across the street (I still have not gotten this one). I asked him about it and he helped me download the app to my phone. Well, an addiction was born that day!! 1160+ caches later and I am still as excited to sign a log as I was 3 years ago.
I am impressed with the things the current board has done and is doing for the members and am humbled that I am even nominated. If I were to be elected I would like to focus on member recruitment through the use of social media. I know many cachers i the Fox River Valley that are unaware of the WGA and what it does for its’ members.
In June 2016 I created a Facebook page for Fox Valley Geocachers; A closed group designed to bring local cachers together. Since its conception we have welcomed 42 cachers, shared favorite caches, made new friends and organized a group night cache outing.
I think that the power of social media can do wonders to educate, entertain and recruit more members. More than just Facebook; Twitter, Snap-chat, Instagram and other outlets have the potential to raise awareness and keep us more connected.
I also think that face-to-face “campaigning” would be beneficial to raise our membership. At WGA sponsored events we should be taking the opportunity to make sure attendees are aware of the WGA membership, what it entails and what the WGA does. I would even go as far as helping non-members sign up of their membership.
