I’m glad this area was once again revisited, after a very brief flirtation 6 years ago.

I’m glad this area was once again revisited, after a very brief flirtation 6 years ago. GO KIDZ!!

This is still in the infant stage, so we are going to try a few things to see what does and doesn’t work. We have two different age groups that stop at age 15 since at 16 one can become a full fledged WGA Member.

A couple other groups I’ve been associated with appoint Youth Advisors from the membership, which report to the BODs. This spreads the work load to the members instead of putting more responsibilities on the BOD. One of the advantages of having districts in the WGA is being able to localize youth group activities without needing to haul the kids all over the state. Youth fund raisers and workshops can help the kids transition to adult responsibilities in the WGA, i.e. “passing the torch”.

Good luck in this important endeavor!

I think this is very important.

Since this thread is recent again, if the WGA is serious about having a youth group with activities at the same Events as adult members, an alcohol/substance policy may need to be discussed. After the recent WGA Picnic, consumption of alcohol during the meeting, as well as references to it, does not set a good example for the youth in attendance.

I’m not a prude, but WGA leadership needs to be vigilant about how the WGA is represented at group functions. In the other adult/youth groups I’ve been involved with, we eventually held adult and youth events separately to enforce the alcohol/substance policy, as it was hypocritical to try to enforce it by adults that had been drinking.

Our goal is to get geocaching parents to get their kids involved in the fun of the hunt. Let’s not scare them away with behavior that can be held in many, many other venues!

    And welcome CRB05!

Jim raises an excellent point.  I’ve been involved in a different type of group where the inclusion of kids under 18 was welcome, but it did create a need for some additional guidelines…including one like this.

This is Aimee of zeeman_clan.  Reading the recent comment in regards to the drinking at the picnic, I am rather curious how you see this as something to concern yourself with?

I was one of the LEGAL adults drinking at the park that ALLOWS the consumption of alcoholic beverages and you think it is the WGAs place to say I cannot? That is interesting to me.

How is that any different than smoking? How about dressing in a shirt that is too revealing or shorts that are too short?  I have tattoos…is that something that I should consider covering up?

You may think I am taking this too far, but I don’t see it that way.  No one was out of line.  No one broke a law. Everyone was kind to each other and there to enjoy a family friendly event together.  Kids there or not, I don’t see this as something that is out if line.  I will not apologize if someone felt offended that I was enjoying an alcoholic drink there.

I have been to hundreds  of fAmily friendly events that have allowed drinking.  Not sure how this one should be held to a different standard.

My posts should in no way be considered as the views or opinions of the WGA or its Board of Directors. All posts made under my name are my personal opinions only.

To clarify…I was only concerned with it DURING THE PRESENTATION later in the day, when the whole membership is assembled, adults and children. To enforce a no alcohol/drug policy at any other time is not realistic, especially at a 2 day camp out or picnic!  I was looking ahead at setting guidelines for a YOUTH GROUP, and the mentors/leaders that will guide them in their activities. To discuss this in advance, as we are now, is good and proper. I have been assured that the BODs will continue the talking points and I appreciate any input that the members have, as do they.

Thank you, Aimee, for your comments. My comments were derived from 35 years of mentoring and supervising different youth groups that have had anywhere from no issues to legal ones. That is why, as a WGA member, I am concerned.

I want to thank you for bringing this to the attention of the WGA.  We have discussed these situations and feedback from the membership on this topic is definitely something we want.  This would have been a great topic in the suggestion box.  As the BOD organized the first Kidz Club, I think it was a great success.

I had a discussion with my children about this topic after the picnic.  My 2 children spent quite a bit of time at the kidz table, helping other younger children and adults alike, both of them said the closest they saw any alcohol may have been 10 ft or so, but those individuals held their beverage secure and did not leave them unattended so a minor may have picked them up.

I thought the BOD did a great job supervising the event and I am sure if  a minor picking up a beverage situation arose, it would have been addressed.  Most likely offline with the childs parents.  Responsibility and safety is a concern we all take seriously and helping our youth stride in the right direction is why we made progress in starting the Kidz Club.

Geocaching events are family friendly, which means there may be fireworks, alcohol, knives, and food, all of which are not allowed to be placed inside a geocache.  Unfortunately, events are held at locations like beer gardens, sports bars, and even picnics.  These are all locations alcohol is allowed in WI.  The Kidz Club is not meant to be a babysitting club though, so each parent still has to stay responsible for their own children.

To summarize, as a BOD member we have discussed the situation.  Can we restrict others from bringing alcohol into a place its accepted, no.  Unless we make the events private, no.  Do we want to gain members who are strolling parks, yes.
