Didn’t get the memo or tps report on them. No idea what they are.
02/13/2014 at 1:20 pm #1974668What’s with all the negativity? I like how Groundspeak is trying something fun and new. It adds a little fun so the game doesn’t get stale. It’s only for a month and is just for those that want to participate.

02/13/2014 at 1:30 pm #1974669I like the potential but there are already so many outlets for creative caches (Wherigo’s, multi’s with virtual stages, offset caches, mystery caches, etc) that I doubt you can really come up with anything truly original. Perhaps, but I’m guessing it’s been done before…in other words, anything you can create as a lab cache could probably also be worked into a geocache.
The biggest draw for a Lab Cache is that it doesn’t have to conform with saturation guidelines…so you could make it as elaborate as you wished and not have to worry about getting denied because it’s too close to another cache. That, to me, is a pretty big plus all by itself.
I did create one for a friend who lives in Seattle, so putting out a physical container wasn’t going to work. Instead, I picked out a very cool multicache that I have found there but she hasn’t and the unlock code was something you found at stage one. The set up was easy to follow but there were few tools you could use, such as html, to pretty up the page. It was very basic as far as page design goes.

I agree. I hope my post doesn’t come off sounding negative, because it wasn’t meant to be. Negativity is what doomed Challenges and I thought the same thing about those…a lot of potential but all anyone wanted to focus on was how they weren’t virtuals.
Once again, as with Challenges, Groundspeak is giving you the freedom to create whatever you want with this lab cache…soo..go nuts, experiment, try anything. The only limit is your imagination.
02/13/2014 at 1:48 pm #1974671Don’t worry Bassanio, my comment wasn’t directed at you. It just seems like whenever Groundspeak does something new there’s a lot of criticism.
FYI, here’s a link so that those who don’t know what I’m talking about. http://view.communication.geocaching.com/?j=ff051572776401&m=fe8f12717d63067b77&ls=fe4b1c757d63037c7d1c&l=ff5d1d7470&s=fe54157670660d75711c&jb=ffcf14&ju=feb61c727c6d0175&r=0
So yesterday I hid my Lab cache. I made a personalized/crafty thing for the recipient. I like having a reason to be creative! Then I climbed a tree and stuck it up there since the recipient’s an excellent climber, better than me for sure. Later that day I was able to go and find my cache. My friend sent me on an adventure going around the library and finding notes inside of different books. It was a blast! The last clue led me to one of his caches where he’d left me a present. It was very cool!

Suspense…..who’s the good climber? Goldie?

02/13/2014 at 2:20 pm #1974673Ha! No, Goldie is scared of climbing. 😆 I hid on for Heavin.

You asked what we think of lab caches. Pro or con or indifferent… We’re letting you know what we think of lab caches.
02/13/2014 at 4:20 pm #1974675I think they are lame. That said, it’s nice to see that Groundspeak is not afraid to try something different.
02/13/2014 at 5:40 pm #1974676We did 6 Lab caches that were put out during Geocoinfest in Las Vegas. A couple were at some interesting out of the way spots and all had some story behind where they were. Reminded us of the old Virtuals. It would be nice if the Virtuals came back with some guidelines.

Um… No.
02/14/2014 at 3:04 am #1974679Too bad. Good place for a cache, too. 🙄

02/14/2014 at 1:23 pm #1974681I actually really like the concept as a potential replacement for virtuals, but I think it’s missing one important aspect which is a coordinate verifier. Similar to Munzee and Sighter which require the user to be within a specific “zone” for the find to trigger in conjunction with the validation code.
What’s the biggest complaint about virtuals? Armchair logging obviously. How do you fix that? Force a coordinate check via the GPS in the smartphone. I know it’s a bit different than traditional caching, but it’s a compromise to bring back something that everyone seemed to like.
As for “Lab” caches. I like the concept because it gives GC.com a chance to try before the implementation and get feedback from the community which is a great idea. They get the chance to throw something out there and see what people think without being totally committed to it.
