For those in the Milwaukee area, the Friends of Lakeshore State Park are hosting an event on June 13, 2009, called Gathering Waters Festival. Mary and I are members of this friends group, but haven’t been involved in planning this particular event. I received a flyer in the mail last week and noticed one of the activities planned for that day is geocaching. Since I own the only geocache on the island ( http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC14Z32 ), I wrote to the organizers to ask what the plans are for geocaching that day and if there is anything I can do to help. I haven’t heard back from them yet. Meanwhile, you can visit their web site for the list of activities and watch for updates: http://www.friendslsp.org/
03/07/2009 at 5:25 pm #1903270An update, I’ve been in touch with Friends organizers and am planning to meet with them next week about this event.
03/31/2009 at 1:19 pm #1903271I’m looking for volunteers who are willing to help represent the WGA at the Gathering Waters Festival, June 13, 2009, at Lakeshore State Park in Milwaukee, which is the island near the Summerfest grounds. We’re going to have a WGA tent and Dave of Team DeeJay will be leading a Geocaching 101 seminar twice during the day at noon and again at 3 p.m.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and I could use six to eight WGA volunteers who can help staff the tent and explain geocaching to walk-up visitors that day. You could also help guide visitors on a demonstration geocache hunt for some of the caches that will be hidden in the park for this event. This will be submitted as an event cache soon on geocaching.com.
I could also use three volunteers to help set up the tent in the morning around 8:30 a.m. and/or help take it down at the end of the day. (If there is no rain in the forecast that day, we’ll set up an 8×8 tent for shade. If rain is possible, we’ll set up a 10×20 tent.)
Please reply back here or send me a PM to let me know if you can help all or part of the day.
Thanks!Ken

aka IowaAdmin03/31/2009 at 2:43 pm #1903272I’d be happy to help out. As of right now, I have nothing on the calendar for that day.
04/06/2009 at 4:38 pm #1903273We’re still in need of more volunteers. Please let me know.
04/29/2009 at 4:00 pm #1903274Bumping this to the top to, hopefully, get some responses. Watch for the event cache to be posted soon.
BTW, I’ve decided not to bring a large 8 x 20 tent because if it’s raining that day, not many visitors will be there anyway. Instead I’ll have an 8×8 tent, which will be less cumbersome to set up and won’t require 3 volunteers to help. But we’ll still need experienced geocachers to help explain geocaching to newbies between the 101 classes.04/30/2009 at 1:35 pm #1903275The event cache is now published: GC1QPWG
06/12/2009 at 2:07 am #1903276Just wanted to bump this topic in hopes of drawing more attention to the event because “rain or shine”, “yes, I’ll be there no matter what” volunteers are needed to make this a success. For those who think we should do more to promote geocaching and the WGA, the WGA tent at the Gathering Waters Festival in Milwaukee this Saturday has the potential to introduce more people to geocaching than any other event we have ever held. Please consider going to the event page and volunteering to help introduce visitors to our geocaching activity.
