My wife wants me to establish a book exchange cache. I had purchased a large water-resistant tackle box. However while the cache was still going through the approval process, it was mauled by a bear and now has several large tooth marks in it. I would like to get a large ammo box but the only ones I have been able to find up here are the standard size ammo boxes.
I will be down in Madison in two weeks. I would appreciate it if someone knew of a place near there which would sell such a large ammo box.
Thanks for any assistance!
10/04/2007 at 2:00 am #1879671You might want to try to get a hold of “Hotdogs Off Trail”, as I know they had an absolutely JUMBO ammo can for sale at the last campout.
10/04/2007 at 2:01 am #1879672Instead of taking 94 all the way to Madison, take the short cut to the west side of Madison on Hwy 12. (If where you need to go in Madison is on the west side, highway 12 is a lot faster, mostly 4 lanes, and is a good road.) You will then pass the Dr Everymore and Lady Eleanor cache. Click here for details: GC9E5E
Immediately adjacent to the cache area is a surplus army type store that will likely give ya a good deal on an ammo box. The store is just north of the cache.

10/04/2007 at 3:08 am #1879673The store is called Delaney’s. If you go that just to look for cans, I’d call ahead. Last time I was there, the owner said he would not be getting them anymore, because the shipping charges for pallets of them were so high.
10/04/2007 at 2:38 pm #1879674Thanks for the suggestions. I definitely want to try to hit that cache if it will work out with my schedule. I have a one-day conference to attend at the U. I will probably try to take different highways there and back to get some quick wayside caches (and a few more counties and Delorme pages!).
I called Delaney’s and unfortunately, they no longer stock ANY ammo cans and did not anticipate getting any in.
10/04/2007 at 3:29 pm #1879675Oconomowoc’s Sherpers Sporting Goods has them if you are ever in town…(45 minutes East of Madison).
10/04/2007 at 4:17 pm #1879676I know that it’s not on your way, but the Fleet Farm in Appleton carries them at a reasonable price ($3.99 (?) for the .30 cal., $5.99 for the .50 cal.). If you can find other Fleet Farms they might have them too.

10/04/2007 at 10:57 pm #1879678I think Appleton will be too far to travel on this trip.
I was hoping for something that can hold at least a dozen different sized books. Looking on-line this might be considered a metal footlocker of medium size or larger (e.g. 29x9x14). However, if Verona is near Madison, I would be happy to buy some regular ammo cans for other caches as I have difficulty finding non-rusty ones up here.
10/10/2007 at 5:27 pm #1879679Verona boarders southwest Madison and I work in Madison as well, so that wouldn’t be a problem.
elfdoctors -pm sent.
10/10/2007 at 7:21 pm #1879680If you REALLY want a big ammo box, they have a grenade launcher ammo box at Sherper’s in Hales Corners. (I think it is same box that has been there since I started going there.) This thing is like 36x30x12. Maybe this would be good for a “large print” book exchange?

@teamdeejay – Hales Corners is probably too far out of my range after a 5 hours drive just to get to Madison. However, a big ammo box like that would be just what I am looking for – almost a library cache!
This hobby is certainly giving me an education about Wisconsin geography. I’ve lived here for 16 years and don’t recall hearing some of these town names (particularly because our television, radio and newspapers all come form Minnesota). Thank goodness for mapquest!
10/31/2007 at 1:26 pm #1879682While we have Fleet and Farm up here in the Fox Valley, they have Farm and Fleet in the south and western part of the state…I’d hit those up, I’ve seen the 50 cal. cans at the Fleet in Plymouth in the past…jeez…you’d think the brothers would stop fighting…..
😯Later
