LCG Map starting point

I have noticed that when I go and load the map that it throws out an error concerning no caches within a certain radius. It then asks if I wish to relocate the center point. Is this a bug in the LCG map or do I have something not setup properly? I would expect it to try to position the center close to my location and not the center of the state.

It has always done that for me. I just zoom out after it is relocated, then I re-center it closer to where I want to look.

We always click on ‘Cancel’, which then just loads in the entire state without zooming in. Then just zoom in to your area of interest from there. 🙂 🙂

OK. So this seems to be a valid bug. Does anyone know if there are plans to correct it?

Actually, it isn’t a bug. It is a program that is put in place by a WGA volunteer for the Lonely Cache Game. If you would like to design a personal program that meets your personal needs to find Lonely Caches, feel free to do so. I, for one, appreciate the efforts that our volunteers put into making geocaching and the LCG the fun that it is.

I just click on the Zoom out button and move the map around.

At the onset, we didn’t have a map…just a list. If the map feature is an issue to use, refer to the list and see which ones are closest to you.

When it pops up that message and there is no apparent way for me to change the center point, that raises a question with me. If I had more free time, I might consider see what I could do to improve on what is there. I already have enough design and programming to do with my job.

I am not saying what is in use is bad, but rather trying to understand it better. It is what I do for a living.

Not sure if this will help, but what the heck!

It looks like the map is being generated from a GSAK database, using the myGME macro. There is a setting in the macro for ‘Radius Distance’ this appears to be defaulting to 5 miles from the centroid of the state (or data). If the distance was instead set to ‘Max’, it might then open with the whole state in view, and in the Cache List.

If you have GSAK, you can do this ‘at home’, and center it at your ‘home location’. You’d do this by opening up the bookmark, creating a Pocket Query, and then downloading the Query into GSAK. You’d then be able to manipulate how you want the map generated, using the myGME macro.

First of all, you can move the center point if you want. Just say yes. And you can drag the center point all over the map or extend the radius. The reason that a small radius is used is because the map loads very slowly for people using certain versions of Internet Exploder if we use a radius that has more than a handful of caches.

This is why I use Firefox. I was tired of my internet exploding 😯
