The Leaf it to Rusk County Geocache Contest is back and starts September 4 and will continue through the first weekend in October. Full details of the event are available at http://www.leafittoruskcounty.com/geocache.php The website includes the links to their geocaching.com listings,(there are a few that are still going through the approval process as of 9/3) but also includes a .pdf of all the caches, names, descriptions, and hints. Entry forms are also available on the site. Participants are encouraged to log their finds on the geocaching.com website.
The quick summary of the event is that there are 25 new caches in Rusk County (the majority are close to Ladysmith or in the Blue Hills area). All of the caches are permanent traditional caches listed on geocaching.com, but also include a clue. There are three ways to win, but use the clues to determine the final answer to qualify for the grand prizes worth $400 and $200, $100 and $50. The first 50 teams to find 13 of the 25 will win a prize, and everybody who finds at least one cache can qualify to win.
A couple words of caution, the contest is designed to have variety of caches, some harder than others, but pretty much accessible to all. They aren’t in plain site, but they are all relatively quick finds. Some have a little walk, but none to difficult. They all hopefully take you to neat little places in this area. The weather and conditions should produce great fall colors this year, so use this as a reason to come see them.
This is our second year of doing the contest, year 1 was awesome and any feedback is appreciated.
Any help in getting the word out is appreciated

Team Sloughfoot just completed the Rusk County Geocaching Challenge 2009. We left Appleton on Sunday morning and did some caching on the way to Rusk county. As we were traveling through Catawba we passed a pickup with a huge bear on the tail gate. Turned around and followed him to the weigh station. That bear was 430# and was shot on the edge of town near a cemetery. Yikes!!
The challenge was a blast and we spent all day Monday running around the county, grabbing caches, eating dust on all the back roads in the county, and dodging bear hunters, trucks of dogs and dogs. Also stopped to watch one bear run across the road. Saw turkeys, deer, a porcupine, eagles, loons and beautiful fall colors.
If you are heading to the big picnic at Lake Wissota, spend another day and do Rusk County.
