The Leaf it to Rusk County Geocache Event has started and will run during the month of September. Full details of the event are available at http://www.ruskcounty.org/visitorsinfo/fallgeocache.asp The website includes the links to their geocaching.com listings, but also includes a .pdf of all the caches, names, descriptions, and hints. Participants are encouraged to log their finds on the geocaching.com website.
The quick summary of the event is that there are 25 new caches in Rusk County (the majority are close to Ladysmith). All of the caches are permanent traditional caches listed on geocaching.com, but also include a clue. There are three ways to win, but use the clues to determine the final answer to qualify for the grand prizes worth $500 and $250. The first 50 teams to find 10 of the 25 will win a prize, and everybody who finds at least one cache can qualify to win.
A couple words of caution, while we do geocache, we are new to doing a contest. If you like to bushwack or work hard to find caches-this contest may not be fore you. They aren’t in plain site, but they are all relatively quick finds. Some have a little walk, but none to difficult. They all hopefully take you to neat little places in this area. The weather and conditions should produce great fall colors this year, so use this as a reason to come see them. If this contest goes well we plan to do more, and we’ve already been kicking around an “Extreme Geocache” event.
    Any feedback is appreciated.

The event looks great! Ladysmith has been on my list of places I have been planning on visiting as there are a fair number of caches there. I’ll probably be making a trip or two to the area soon!

What a great series of caches! For those looking for a fall color tour, I would highly recommend the 25 new Rusk County caches. Colors havent started to change yet, but will soon.

Most of the caches in the series are very easy. Most are small ammo cans. I would say about 15 or so of them are park and grabs, and the other 10 are pleasant walks in nice places. It would be possible to find all 25 in a single day, if you focused on doing just the event caches.

If you do decide to cache in Rusk County this fall, you may also want to look at my bookmark list of Top Ten caches in Rusk County. Here is the bookmark list:

I was able to get about 1/2 of the caches (as well as finding most of the non-event caches in the area I went in) during a half day there. The area is very scenic and I would echo zuma!’s recommendation to try to get up here this month during this fun event.

I hope to be back again soon to finish up the rest of the caches around this area.

We can’t promise all participants the same experience … nor would we want to… but a cache on the Leaf it To Rusk County contest produced some interesting moments for a cacher. It was an unfortunate incident and certainly not what we would want to have anyone experience, thankfully it came out alright, but still you just never know what you will run into. The contest is seeing a good amount of activity, come experience Rusk County geocaching, fun finds-great prizes.

We are wondering what teams won the prizes in the contest. Anyone here?

As noted in a previous entry, we had an interesting experience. Was not harmful. The kids thought it was great !! Of course they did not “understand” what it was all about. They just loved watching the police and fire trucks!
