Guilty as charged (I think anyway). My actual GZ was NW of the cache about 50′.
But I’ve always been hesitant to give updated coords or “spoil” it by listing distance direction. I guess in all honesty I never thought about it all that much. Now that I’m reading this thread I realize that alternate coords and/or distance w/ direction isn’t such a bad thing. If you’re already at the posted GZ knowing which way and how far is certainly helpful (Based on this I could easily project a new WP and walk the line towards it). With a second set of coords I could also plot it and walk the line.
I guess this just goes to show that we can all continually learn. In this case I’ve had a false idea for 2+ years and 1300+ caches, but I’m willing to change.

Surprised you even got that! Must not be WGA members. It’s kind of like the Emperor has no clothes, Mr. President…….”Yup! He’s off again, but I’m not sayin’ nuttin!'” 😆
08/25/2011 at 8:23 pm #1952495For me, if the coords are off by more than 30′, I post corrected coordinates. Less than 30′, only if there is damage occurring or it is a very difficult hide.
08/26/2011 at 3:21 am #1952496I got a log recently, by a new cacher that was mad that the cache coords were off 10 feet and that they had to leave the parking lot to find it.

Brilliant….I woulda had fun posting an owner maintenance on that one…”we are now offering a cache shuttle on site and the cache location has been marked by a flashing beacon.”
On the Left Side of the Road...08/26/2011 at 12:15 pm #1952503If I’m one of the first finders and nobody has mentioned the situation, then I assume that maybe my GPSr is off and the posted coordinates are accurate. If there are several previous logs saying “the cache was 50′ away from GZ!” though, then I will post my coordinates and make a mention of them in my log in case the CO wants to use them.

Seriously?! 🙄
I found one in Idaho this summer where the coords were 50 feet off. I took new coordinate readings but when I went to log I chickened out. Now I’m feeling guilty. 😳

Now you tell me. I made multiple trips to this one completing it in pieces. Sure would have been nice to know there was a shuttle bus for this one. 😉 😆 😉 😆

Ha! I had a similiar log on one of my caches awhile ago. He was complaining my cache was off 12 feet – he should know as he was using a “very high degree of accuracy GPS”. Then proceeded to tell me I need to update my coords or get a better GPS. I wish I would’ve had a witty GR response at my disposal for this loser.
08/26/2011 at 7:03 pm #1952507Thanks to all who shared their thoughts on this dilemma. We don’t worry about 30 feet off or even greater if the hint is decent, knowing how much variation there can be. We have just encountered more and more of the type of logs that say, “coords were off, but have fun!” on caches with no hint, in beacon rich environments with significant elevation changes that are rated as easy. As I said, we stopped being helpful ourselves for awhile as a reaction to some of the “nanananabooboo” comments we’ve seen, but have gone back to our roots to be the change we’d like to see. The distance and direction comments were especially insightful, thanks for bringing that up. Thanks again, it’s always interesting to hear the different perspectives everyone can bring to these questions.
08/26/2011 at 10:16 pm #1952508My favorite log I’ve read, for coordinates being off, was” Cache must be missing. Our GPS is accurate to within .1 miles, so it’s probably gone.”
