Even though many geocachers have hidden caches there are only about two dozen in Wisconsin who have hidden 100 or more caches. There are many geocachers in the state who have 1000+ finds and have hidden none or very few caches. This is not a complaint. Everyone enjoys and has the right to play the game the way that provides them with the fun they are seeking. Without caches hidden there would be no game. So let’s respect those who are willing to place hides for all of us to enjoy. Even though the condition of a cache is important, use some common sense and exercise your responsibility as a participant and do your part to help maintain caches when possible. As far as accuracy, geocaching is not rocket science, even though we can thank rocket science in part for it’s existance. The geo-sense that you develop is just as important in finding a cache as the coordinates. Let’s see some topics started that are positive and informative instead of those that encourage whining and complaints.
Mister Greenthumb – owner of 130+ hides and 20+ in the works.
10/23/2009 at 4:48 pm #1915641Thank you, Bill. I don’t know if it’s the weather or what, but things in general seem to be a bit contentious around here lately. As I commented in another post, while we might whine and moan to each other or friends in person about this cache or that cache, I don’t like to gripe in my logs. If I didn’t find it….I didn’t find it. Period. No one’s fault but my own in the end. If I found it and thought it sucked for some reason, well, I still found it. I’m glad there are others putting them out and thank each and every one of those people for putting forth those efforts.

62 hides and several more in the works, including some nasty series of Trekkin’s!10/23/2009 at 6:08 pm #1915642I agree with being grateful for those who place and maintain caches. There sure are a lot more than when we started geocaching, and a lot of variety for searchers to pick from, or bypass if a certain cache or type of cache isn’t for them that day. Not everything we find turns out to be inspiring, but it is still a find. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Fair treatment of caches, and rehiding them as intended, or even replacing a wet, full, or damaged log at times, are good ways to show our gratitude for all the opportunities out there. Some, but not all, may take us to a suberb or scenic location, or give us some great ideas in the design of the cache container, or enlighten us with something we never knew much about in a puzzle, or maybe not. There is a vast smorgasboard of hides out there, and that is a good thing for all the different tastes in the game.
We only have fifty-five caches out, and that is enough to keep us pretty busy keeping them in great shape, which we like to do for our own. It’s good to see so many new hides pop up, and the creative efforts of those who bring their own ideas and style to the opportunities for all of us. Thanks to all who have or take the time to place them.

On the Left Side of the Road...10/23/2009 at 8:46 pm #1915644I dont think we will ever be a 100+ cache hider team. We have our hands full maintaining the 26+ caches we have out there now (under our name and others).
I have to admit, after my last maintenance run, I was ready to stop hiding completely. One cache was so far off, I almost had to DNF it. How it moved 2o ft away in the middle of a clearing is beyond me. Another had bunch of crumpled up gum wrappers stuffed in it. I am pretty sure no one will be trading for them. In fact all of them had garbage in them. The worst was someone had unwound the 2 feet of wire that was holding the cache close to a branch and rehung it like a christmas ornament
I was pretty depressed on the way home. However, by the time I got there, I was thinking about some of the memorable finds I had made and realized I am not going to let a few bad apples taint my attitude. Hiding caches is a great way to thank the other hiders. I would also suggest going one step further and write a good log. I know for us non-writers its a challenge but they are a great reward. And let’s face it the critical logs suck, I’d rather see a TFTC.
Thanks Bill for starting this thread, oboviously, I am not the only one who thinks hiders are underappreciated.
10/23/2009 at 11:52 pm #1915645I have 91 active caches and recently archived about 6 because they had gone missing or needed maintenence and it was just easier to remove it then repair them.
I drive truck and am not home a lot and it seems like the last six months all I have done on my time off is run and do maintenence on my caches. I have come to be pretty disgusted with all the work involved for petty complaints and just inconsiderate people in how they replace or treat the caches that I had decided not to hide anymore for the time being and maybe even archive a few more of the ones I have out.
I am one person that will not complain at all if someone does minor maintenence on my caches. It helps me so much when it is done and is really apprecitated.
Which reminds me, I have a nm log on my tanks for the nano, necedah cache because of a full log and I totally forgot about going up there and replacing it last week when I was home. Will have to put that one at the top of my list for when I next get back home.

Just drove by that one Wednesday. Want us to slip a log in there for you next time we go that way (could even be this Monday)? That’s assuming we can find that @#$%&* nano again!

That would be great if you could. The hint is good and makes it pretty easy. Unless the container has moved itself. 😆 Otherwise it will be 2 weeks before I can get to it.
10/24/2009 at 2:51 am #1915648Trekkin’ found that one by slipping on the ice and falling on his backside. It placed him right where he needed to be to make the find, LOL.

And you didn’t post pictures of that?
