Do any of you letter box too? We found one today that we thought was near a cache. We were right… It had a TB in it too. Can the directions be downloaded into the Palm?
Timberline Echoes08/22/2006 at 10:03 pm #1764853Are you by chance talking about the letterbox near that “bat hill” in Iron Mountain, MI? We discovered it instead of the cache this past week, and I know your more or less near that area.
Here is the letterboxing of America website:
http://www.letterboxing.orgI doubt that anyone has bothered with Paperless, since there are only 400 of them in the whole state of WI. The “Search for Boxes” pages does include an excel export option, but it provides incomplete info leaving out the details of where the box is specifically.
This is the one we found by mistake about 110′ from a cache, while expanding our search area (the cache is trashed, only items of it are laying around).
08/22/2006 at 11:04 pm #1764854I look for them on occasions, but not anywhere near as often as I do geocaches. One main reason is that there are far fewer of them around. They involve following directions that pertain to landmarks and may require a compass for bearings and pacing off in a certain direction (like projecting waypoints). Sometimes the instructions may seem vague or confusing, unless you know the area really well. On occasions, letterboxes are found on accident by geocachers while searching for caches. I have found a couple like that myself. Most of them tend to be like rubbermaid or tupperware containers of what we would classify as ‘small’ in size. They contain ink pads so letterboxers can stamp that they were there in the logbook. Some have small trade items in them, too.
08/23/2006 at 12:26 am #1764855Thanks… we knew it was there, we did not find it by accident. This one was on the Bearskin trail near Hazelhurst, it was called Biking Bear. Thanks for letting us know about the Bat Cave one as we are helping a friend geocache without a GPSr and she looked for that cache the other day but then we found out it was disabled. We will give her the letterboxing directions.
Timberline Echoes08/23/2006 at 1:32 am #1764856I just spent much of my Sunday letterboxing at the Bristol Renn Faire! 8)
I have done a few others. My main beef with them is there is no feedback mechanism. If it has been missing a while, there is no way to know that from the listing on Letterboxing.com – no way to post DNFs. I’ve been on more than one wild goose chase because of that.
I found one letterbox by accident while searching for a cache in Milwaukee called “Wisconsin State Symbols Cache”. The letterbox, called “Sockless Hobo” was close by. It was missing the stamp, but the logbook was there. Looked like most of the recent visitors had been geocachers!
