    Candidates,
Are you familiar with the WGA Bylaws? The third bullet point of Article II specifically mentions that one of the purposes of the WGA is to promote the Leave No Trace program. http://www.lnt.org/
Recent boards have completely ignored this, instead choosing to concentrate increasingly on events. If elected, how do you plan to promote the LNT program?

Simple answer = CITO, more local CITO events cover events to bring members together as well as a direct LNT impact.

Long answer = Develop a relationship with LNT. As far as I know, David (CacheNoTrace) is the entirety of LNT in WI. Why not try and use him as a resource to bridge geocaching to Leave No Trace and move forward. The WGA is full of members who are avid outdoorsfolk and I have to believe there is a potential benefit to LNT for working with us. Educational information, workshops, and training could all be available to us. Plus being partnered with LNT could help the group in our dealings with the DNR and other agencies. Our public image being more than a group of crazy people playing a “game” can’t hurt.

I think KFH hit the nail on the head. Excellent answer that I don’t have a better response to.

There are really three points to this question.

First, events are to promote socialization, caching, and to educate.

Second CITO is to pick up trash, usually that stuff not left by any self-respecting geocacher.

Finally, LNT is an ideal, a mindset, a point of personal pride, that I will not do damage (or leave something behind), just to make a find.

All three of these are inexorably intertwined. If you go to an event, you may be educated about LNT, or just pick it up from your fellow cacher’s demeanor. If you attend a couple of CITO events, that really drives it home that ” I don’t want to be like that”.

So keep holding events to promote the social aspect, but also incorporate LNT within each event, especially CITOs.

Wow, that is a great question Brian.
I really hadn’t thought of LNT in the way it should be thought of. CITO is a very small part of a much bigger picture that is LNT. Many of us geocachers think CITO and LNT are the same thing but LNT is much more diverse than just picking up a bit of trash in a park or along a trail. I encourage everyone to click on the link Brian provided above and see how each of us can get more in touch with NLT.

as far as promoting LNT as a BOD member, that will take a bit more thought but the seed has been planted and needs to grow.

When I was involved in scouting LNT was a part of the training I received as an Assistant Scout Master. I agree that LNT should definitely be more of a front burner issue for the BOD as well as the WGA in general. Finding ways to promote LNT as an organization be it through training at events, more exposure on the website, or through other means should be something the BOD should look at.

If elected, would you (the candidates) be wiling to take on LNT as your cause/project?

    Following the signals from space.

The WGA does have a standing committee that addresses education. I would put this in that realm to be addressed but as all BODs are considered to be on all the committees, as direct members or indirect advisors, this would be addressed.

Hi Team Black-Cat, whenever I am out Geocaching I always have this in my mind and I do this by doing garbage collection when I see trash laying around. If I know that I am going to damage a area knowing I have to use my walker to get to a cache there is been times I will stay back while I let my husband bring the cache to me. I always like the saying leave no footprints while caching!. I like to make sure that I leave a area I geocache at in better shape then I find it. I would promote this by telling all of my geocaching friends to do this all well it helps our environment. I answered this question to the best of my abilities.
