is there a way to lock some of the wps in my garmin so that they don’t get accidentally erased?

My “trick” for handling that is to change the symbol for the waypoint. For example, our home and homes of friends are symbolized by houses, so that when I go in and delete geocaches and flagged waypoints they are always there. Someone else may have system that works better, but this is really easy.

Unless someone else disagrees, the short answer is “no”.

However, one “trick” would be to change the SYMBOLS for the waypoints that you do NOT want to delete to something you can remember. Then in the future, get in the habit of deleting “By Symbol Type” to steer clear of the ones you want to save.

A real life example … I always want to keep my OWN geocaches on my GPSr, so they all have the “pizza” symbol (don’t ask!) … while I let normal caches that I’m seeking to have the “geocache” symbol … then when I want to “clean house” and reload from MapSource, I highlight one of the geocache symbol-ed waypoints, and hit “Delete By Symbol Type”. This of course is useless, if you mess up and in error select “Delete All” instead.

There are two other options. First, you can create a second database of “non-cache” waypoints that you just reload every time you clear your GPS and reload the new caches. That is probably the simplest approach.

Alternatively, you can use the Garmin POI Loader to load them as Custom POIs. Essentially, you create a GPX file of the “special” waypoints and then use the POI Loader to install them. These are not waypoints, but function like the other POI information in your GPS (highway exits, geographic landmarks, restaurants, etc. depending on your mapping package). These points are completely separate from your waypoints, so you can safely delete all your waypoints without touching your special locations. This is probably the best approach, but is a little more technical.

This would be the best option, but Garmins POI loader isn’t compatible with a 60c, only Garmins X model handhelds(X stands for expandable memory). Custom POI’s are stored on the data card.
