If you note that an apparent newbie logs their own cache, do you leave it alone or send them a note about it.
08/04/2005 at 11:06 pm #1740744I used to send them a note inquiring as to whether or not they know not to log their own find, and gently suggesting that they remove the log. I don’t do that anymore since I discovered there are some seasoned cachers who log not only their own caches, but caches they return to w/ a different group than the original one. I suppose it falls under the “to each his own” thing!
Me…I don’t log mine. I don’t log return visits. I don’t log a cache that wasn’t actually found in my presence. But that’s me.

I think I was being helpful in that instance, but Major Brat is right that some people have an interesting way of playing. In a more benign vein a summer school class near us has an account and different kids have been out at different times and logged the same cache each time.

I think I know which one you’re talking about since I watch the EC area caching activity too. I often email new cachers in my own town just to be friendly and welcoming. You could start off with something along those lines, but also include info on how to post notes to your own caches. Many newbies just don’t know about that option. If they respond – great, maybe you’ve got a new caching friend. If not, oh well, you tried.

* * * * * * * * * *08/08/2005 at 12:59 am #1740747I am new and I will admit that we logged all three of our caches as finds. this was not in any way to help our stats, I hid the caches and let the rest of the team go search for it. we talked it over and felt that yes our team hid the cache but only one of us actually new of its location. so the majority of the team had indeed found a new cache. maybe we were wrong, but nobody ever said a thing.
08/08/2005 at 1:22 pm #1740748I posted notes for my hidden caches. I wanted to be shure that it worked but did not want to log it as a find. I wanted the FTF be a random chance. Just my two cents.
The only freedom we have is decideing what we do with the time we have.09/08/2005 at 12:54 am #1740749There are several caches which we have been to many times. Some are convenient, some are really neat, but all of the repeated ones are because we have rookies with us. We’ve always posted a note on subsequent visits, just to let the owners know somebody has found their cache, and also to give the rookies something to look at on the cache page. Kids, especially, like to see their exploits on the webpage! (First names only, nothing which will identify specific kids.)
