While I may have been one of those who “didn’t understand” what was being talked about originally, I do understand now and agree with House of Brew – Let Geocaching be whatever you want it to be.
While many of us have some great conversations about caches we have done, I recall very few about Travel Bugs we have found. They are just a fun part of geocaching that some like and others don’t.
Last time I checked, the total number of Travel Bugs you have found buys the same amount of coffee as the total caches you have found (make sure you have cash with you).
What if I bought a travel bug tag and attached it around my neck? Would everyone be willing to move me from cache to cache? That would sure save on gas and walking (yes you have to carry me)

06/22/2004 at 9:17 pm #1747079Whitnallgps is correct in that we are not talking about personal travel bugs. We do not care how teams log travel bugs, we were just wondering if it is a common practice to log a bug without actually taking it.
06/22/2004 at 9:34 pm #1747080To my knowledge, it’s not a normal practice to log a travel bug without taking it, although I see that a few people were doing it at the last event. Again, “we visited with a travel bug” or “we saw this travel bug at the event” should not count if you don’t take it with you and drop it off somewhere else. If you want to mention that, put it in your log for the cache. Travel bugs are meant to be picked up and moved elsewhere!
06/23/2004 at 2:25 am #1747081I guess the “rules” here must be different for the Jeep Travel bugs then?
06/23/2004 at 2:30 am #1747082“friendly conversations” about this same topic can be found througout the various threads on the geocaching.com boards under “travel bugs”. They read very similar to this thread. Someone asks a question, flames start, die down, and everybody feels good again.
But seriously, I’ve seen a few other states where everyone logs the TBs at the events. our neighbors in Minnesota is one of them. Also, I think I read about Utah doing it.
That’s all the commentary from me for tonight. Time to feed the “stats hamster”.
06/23/2004 at 2:31 am #1747083Here is my opinion on TB’s
I put my TB’s out there to watch them travel and may a photo from its travels. It has kind of turned into a number game.who can record the most TB’s Found and record it.To me it seems like a lazy way to find these. To find them and not move them on doesnt seem to be the way it was intended. If I see one in a cache and the owner wants it to move south,I will pick it up and move it south. If I cant,I will leave it and not record it.
It is like multi caches.Should I record the same multi three times because there were 3 caches in the Multi???
Nothing wrong with recording what you have accomplished. But just happening to see something doesnt seem like an accomplishment:>No Offense….
06/23/2004 at 4:11 am #1747084It’s just odd to see someone take a bug home from the picnic, “grab” the bug from the picnic, then a couple of days later, someone “grabs” the bug from them, then drops it back into the picnic cache even though the first team still has the bug in their posession at home. They have to grab it from the picnic cache yet again.
While I realize that some of the rules of geocaching are fairly loose, this just doesn’t seem to be right. If you don’t have the bug in your posession when you log it in, then you probably shouldn’t be logging it at all.
