I was curious to what everyone’s thoughts are on people logging their own caches as finds? I just noticed one and it struck me as being odd to say the least…

of The Cacheseekers08/13/2004 at 5:09 am #1747637We don’t log our own caches. I don’t understand why some people do.

http://www.cachechasers.com08/13/2004 at 10:29 am #1747638I guess the proper protocol is:
If its an event you host, you would log your own event cache if you show up.
Perhaps a locationless cache would qualify as a find if you found what is being required.
All others are probably just a case of hitting the wrong button and logging as a find when they meant a note. I am sure if this is the case, whoever it is will change it.
08/13/2004 at 12:23 pm #1747639I noticed one yesterday too! I’m sure it was meant to be a note about dropping a travel bug in their own cache. I even saw a DNF with a smile a week or so ago.
08/13/2004 at 2:18 pm #1747640I think I may hae seen the same one, Miata. I don’t log my own as finds because I didn’t have to look for it- just for a place to put it. I also don’t get people returning to a cache and marking it as a find again. I only find caches one time. If I return (even if I need the GPS to find it again)- it’s a note.
08/13/2004 at 9:18 pm #1747641Miata, I think that was me who accidentally pushed the wrong button and logged a no find as a find..I did eventually catch my mistake and changed it. So, WZbto3 was right that some of us make mistakes by pushing the wrong button. Thanks from Tami
08/13/2004 at 10:39 pm #1747642Accidents happen. I didn’t want to single anyone out, so don’t worry Tami the finger wasn’t pointed at you.
The only time I will relog a cache is when it has been changed and the owner specifically says that it is OK as in R&R’s “Embarassed” cache would be if I ever get back there with the new coordinates.

08/13/2004 at 11:09 pm #1747643We all make these mistakes from time to time. We once had a log by a cacher from Montana that had concurrently logged a few finds in his home state. We sent him a note with some gentle ribbing about jet travel. He responded with an appreciative and gracious appology.
Last weekend I was guilty of logging two finds at a cache while skipping a log at another cache we had found.
I found it is a good idea to recheck my posts.

08/16/2004 at 6:35 pm #1747644Wow! I would love to be able to log my own caches…that would take my #’s up another… well…3…LOLOLOL! (just kidding…that is just silly…although I did log caches when I had walked w/ the owner during the placement)
And I have been known to push the wrong buttons once or twice in my lifetime. If you doubt this just ask my sister…Lucy, you’ll back me up on that, right?
Hey I’m all sorts of funny today. Must be from 4 days of caching in a row.

08/20/2004 at 3:03 am #1747645I think it’s perfectly OK to log your own cache as a “Find” in the following circumstance – (what does everybody else think?)
You decide to hide a cache along with a pal, and do at least half the work of putting it in. Both of your names are listed in the “by…..” on the description page, but it is “officially” his cache, because it was submitted under his owner ID and geocaching.com only allows for a single owner per cache.
Obviously, he doesn’t log it as a “Find” (but of course he still gets “credit” of a sort for placing a hide, while you officially get none). Not only that, but it shows up on your lists as an unfound cache every time you do a search. That could be very annoying, especially if it’s close to your home!
So, it seems that the best thing to do is to log a “Find” on your own cache! That way, it won’t keep showing up on your unfound lists, and you get a credit for it – just like you would if you were the “official” owner.
I noticed that House of Brew did this on a cache (B&B – A Moving Experience, GCJ0N8). On the cache description page, they are listed as cache owner (along with Socko & Vincetti), yet they clearly posted a “Find” log for this cache. If you click on the owner profile, it takes you to Socko’s page, so I assume Socko is the “official” owner – but on the cache description, this cache is listed as being by House of Brew as well.
Personally, I don’t see anything wrong with logging a “Find” on your own cache in a case like this – in fact, I think it’s advisable. I have two dual-ownership caches myself (GCJ9Y9 & GCJ9YB), but I have not yet logged them (mostly because I still haven’t caught up on all the other “Finds” I have to log).
I’m sure a little search would turn up plenty of other dual-ownership caches that are logged as being “Finds” by one of their owners.

08/20/2004 at 3:53 pm #1747646I’m not sure I have an opinion on this topic, but to help add to it: The reason we logged A moving experience, was because I (Brew) had hid it with Socko, and then one day Chili and Micro Brew hunted it, since it was so close to our house. If the 2 of them had gone on a cache without me, we still log the cache, so I found nothing wrong with logging that cache. They also hunted the caches we “officially own” per geocaching.com, but we didn’t log those as finds.
09/11/2004 at 4:18 am #1747647how do you unlog it if you pushed the wrong button?

Visit the cache page and you will find two options at the bottom of your entry
[view/edit….] and
[upload…]select [view/edit…]
the next screen will offer the options to edit or deleteselect delete
the next screen looks like this one with an added line above the edit and delete buttons that asks “Are you sure you want to delete this log entry?” and offers the options to cancel or yes.select yes and the log is gone.
09/11/2004 at 3:14 pm #1747649I logged a cache a year and a half ago. this week i have adopted it. i would think this is one of the few acceptable ways to log “your own” cache.

I too have found caches that I later adopted. So, it will show I found it and I now own it.
I show “originally by and then adopted by” in the tagline plus have a note in the cache listing as such to address any concerns such as this.
