02/03/2015 at 1:19 pm #2035033Jim, Any suggestions as to caches on the Reserve that might be reasonable for people to seek and still take part in the actual event? We aren’t early out the door these days when we go (unless there’s a bird involved…then I can make an exception! 😉
02/03/2015 at 2:18 pm #2035035Gwyn, I was going to ask Jim the same thing. I was looking at the Mother Goose series GC3A1R3. A hike and 7 caches. Hasn’t been found since May, but it has been found several times in winters past.
02/03/2015 at 2:24 pm #2035036Jim, were you or any other area cacher considering hiding any caches near the event?

02/03/2015 at 3:45 pm #2035039Jim and/or others shouldn’t feel the need to put out new caches for the LCG event, since I don’t recall this ever being done for past events. If anyone chooses to do so, fine, but most people plan their routes to do some caching before and after the event with the caches that are already in place near the event or on the way to or from the venue.
I think Gwyn and Bill were trying to get ideas of just how long some of the caches in the marsh would take to do so that they could plan accordingly. They aren’t exactly P&Gs! 😯 😉
02/03/2015 at 7:53 pm #2035053No one should feel obligated but I was asking if he had plans for new caches. I hope to be able to get over for the event and away from work for a few hours.
The LCG Event is always special because the members are the ones that host the event. Also, last year Woodland and Susie Sumac placed several new snowshoeing caches which was a fun surprise.

02/03/2015 at 9:00 pm #2035058OK, let me see if I can cover all this.
From East to West, some Park and Grab, or close to it, caches are: Hunting Dog Heaven, Old Silo on Popple Road, Mead Wildlife Trail Cache, Get Launched: EPR – Georges Landing, Ursa Minor – Polaris, Hello: My Name is bigjim60 (not actually on Mead property), Welcome to Owl City, and BIGJIM 3000 (puzzle).
The Mother Goose series is a nice walk of about 2 – 3 miles, depending on the route you pick. Most of the trail is driveable, but it is gated. I noticed vehicle tracks going through the gate this weekend, so someone has been driving out there, probably a firewood gatherer. I’m hoping to get out to check on these this weekend.
“How Much … ?” is a short walk from the deadend. “By the Ponds” is also a short walk from the parking, but not very winter friendly.
There is a multi (really a field-solve puzzle) that starts at the visitor center and a couple others near the center that can be easily walked to. The ones to the north of the center, along the Townline Flowage dike, are a hike and may not be winter friendly. Bad George, will require a hike on un-plowed/un-groomed trails and bushwhacking.
The rest of the Ursa Minor series will require some walking. Two are near snowmobile trails, two are fairly near roads or dikes that may be plowed. Urodelus is a hike, probably best done on snowshoes, and Yildun … mrahahahaha!
I do have ideas for a few new ones, but don’t know if I will have time to get them all placed and do the maintenance checks that I want to get done.

02/04/2015 at 1:32 pm #2035080Jim, Thanks so much for the detailed rundown. It’s very helpful. We’re looking forward to exploring the area and hope the weather cooperates.
02/16/2015 at 10:07 am #2035699Here’s another question about Mead. I’ve downloaded their birding brochure and tried checking on the eBird site to see what birds might be around right now. Is there a birding club associated with the center that might have more current info? (I suppose I could put google to work, too).
02/16/2015 at 4:04 pm #2035708There isn’t really a birding club associated with the center, but the Aldo Leopold Audubon Society holds some events there. That maybe a place to start.
