I’m not sure I would be too eager to geocache in these parts…

08/14/2006 at 2:52 am #1764526Scary for sure.
Bubonic plague, the same thing that was known as the Black Plague in Europe in the 1300’s is endemic mostly in the southwestern United States. It’s caused by bacteria that are carried by infected rodents. Other things to be wary of are tick borne diseases such as Rocky Mountain Spotted fever and Lymes Disease, the latter of which is found in Wisconsin.08/14/2006 at 3:20 pm #17645278) Actually, this disease has been around for a long time in the US. Mainly in the “4 corners” area where Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico meet. It is a Navajo reservation that has had problems with the plague for sometime.
08/14/2006 at 10:46 pm #1764528We had an unofficial meeting of the local Sawyer County Geocachers last week and it was brought up when out hunting to be aware of Meth Labs!!
Up here are some very rural areas an many abandon hunting camps and buildings. From what I was told there was one found north of us and a couple east of us. Just a word of warning is all.
08/15/2006 at 12:30 am #1764529We have been doing some research on the diseases that ticks spread since our brother-in-law has been hospitalized all week from a bacterial infection contracted from a tick. We were only aware of lymes and Rocky Mountain spotter fever… there are several others around. Anyone who gets flu like symptoms and a high fever should let the doctor know that they spend time outdoors and could have been biten by a tick. Our BIL has no recollection of being bit, did not have a rash or any idea that a tick bit him. The specialist in Duluth was able to identify it after many tests. He was released from the hospital today but has lost a bunch of weight and is spending most his time horizontal.
Take precautions not to get bit.
Timberline Echoes08/15/2006 at 1:36 am #1764530Sorry to hear about your brother-in-law. Was it Human Anaplasmosis? That one sounds nasty. I had Lyme’s last year and luckily caught it early so was only horribly miserable when the fever hit instead of worse and it didn’t drag on long as it might have. I feel very sorry for anyone who gets these types of diseases and had a delayed diagnosis.
Hope he’s well soon.
