I’m planning a trip to Shawano in the next couple months. Can anyone recommend some really great caches within say 20 miles of Shawano (or up to 30 miles to the South)? I like rock and water features quite a bit and anything with a view is a good thing…

If you like rocks and Water, maybe you should alter your route to take you through the Wausau/ Rib Mountain area. 😀

I’ll get there…..eventually. The Tennessee mountains are also in my not too distant future…but that is another thread..and possibly on a different forum (does Tenn have a geocaching org?).

They actually have 3 separate Geo. Associations. The Middle West, and SE

    Link to middle Middle TENN
    Link to WEST West TENN
Link to SE South East TENN

The mountains are in eastern Tennessee. Unfortunately, the forums for that organization are not well attended. I posted a note asking for guidance 4 weeks before visiting and received the first response 6 weeks after I posted. Assuming you don’t want to wait, here is the skinny. All of the caches in national park are virtuals or earthcaches, and most of them are worth the trip. Our favorite was the Grotto Falls (GC2C4B). Outside of the park, there were lots of parking lot hides, city park hides, church hides, and cemetery hides. On the Tennessee side, our favorite was Restin’ with Gnats (GCM1QA). Mostly, we would hike to a virtual in the morning, geocache our way through the area in the afternoon, then find a swimming hole for late afternoon. A great way to spend vacation in my book.

lol Thanks …..Well know I know what to look for in Tenn….even if that trip is still a couple months away…Thanks for the tip on the response from their boards too…I’ll be sure to post early or maybe I’ll just email a couple local cachers out of the blue…that worked really well for my trip to Iowa this past spring.

Are looking for nice trails and parks. difficult terrain, or….???

Unique hides, great views; places that make me want to bring out the camera and snap a shot or two. I plan to bring my kids as well (10 and 12) so nothing too dangerous or with such a long walk where they will tire or get board (nothing further than .50 miles from the parking area…unless the cache is truly outstanding).

Personally I like my “Let’s Go Fishing” series in Bluegill Bay Park. It is a series of five caches and the trails are easy to walk for the kids. The kids can fish or catch frogs and it is a very nice park. As for good or unique hides, try “Look Up at Rib Mt. 1&2.”and “Pineapple.” If you are coming on HWY 29 I would also recommend some of my Moutain Bay Trail hides, such as “Where on the Mt. Bay is Sponge Bob?”

For a great view, try Rick’s “Spare Rib.” This will be a much longer walk and the terrain is not level. The view at the cache site however is outstanding. Some of the logs have posted pictures. You will need a State Park sticker to get this one though.

These sound great. I will plan to hit most or all of them when I visit.
    THANKS.

Let us know when you do decide to come…maybe we can plan a ticker-tape parade for you. 😉

Awe come on I’m only famous in my own (swelled) mind…

If my kids stay back at camp for some of the finds, look for flashlights around 4:30 am…that’s me.

Are you camping on the Mountain?

    #1891885

Sadly no. We have a cabin reserved at Tilleda Falls Campground…in Tilleda (smack dab in the middle of nogeocacheville). I’m going to have to travel like an hour to get to any concentrated areas…East South or West. The good thing is that I get up early and if I’m by myself (which I will be for most of the caching) I will spend the prelight hour driving to my destinations…which at the moment look like Wausau and Shawno.

I’m thinking about taking a day to myself and going for a personal best (most found) day in Wausau. I’d love to attempt a 50+ day…then come back with the fam the next day to visit the long hikes and the more memorable caches as a family. I like to push myself and see where my limits are from time to time…just ask my (ZigZag Nuts team-mates)…next month I’m going to do the Madison “Urban Assault Ride.” Not much chance of winning that competition as I’m not familiar with the area but I’ll still give er’ Hell.
