The legend of the mystery hat lives on. Here’s a photo from our expedtition on the Mississippi River. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?IID=83f1316f-6ff5-4312-a3d4-d461c8263797&LID=5031697

Another picture of the mystery hat.

Hang on to your hats everyone – mystery solved! The mystery woman is “C” of ABCDMCachers (Carrie), and yes it is her hat. She didn’t realize that it was missing until I noticed this forum.
We found an overview photo of the picnic and we see exactly where she left it. See if you can find it (hint: ybbx haqre gur cvpavp gnoyr).

OK, now that the mystery is solved, what should be done with the hat? Carrie has no strong attachement to the hat so she’s fine with using it as a mascot, or using it as a TB (maybe its goal could be to be signed by everyone who attended the picnic), or whatever else you can think of. Or just feel free to put our name on it and drop it in a cache somewhere between where you are and Brookfield, and we’ll pick it up.
Thanks for the amusing (and somewhat odd) posts! Doug (D of ABCDMCachers)
Who was the genius who started the “Have you seen this hat” calling card? It’s hilarious! We found one today and plan to show it to C, the owner of the hat.
Here is the card:

It got a little wet so it’s kind of hard to read. It says: “Have you seen this hat? Be on the lookout! Hat has been chasing geocachers around the state of Wisconsin since August 19, 2004. Hat may appear pleasant but has been causing havoc wherever it goes. If found stay clear and contact http://www.wi-geocaching.com/ Immidiately!”
This makes me wonder where the hat really is right now.

We’re still wondering what happened/will happen to the hat. It would be pretty funny to make it a TB, but we’ll also probably be at the March On Washington DC event so we could pick it up there.
I still have the hat. If you would like it returned to you, please let me know.
