i got my new mac computer last week. it’s been a bit of a struggle learning how it works. and getting programs to do what i need.
i found what looks to be a very good GSAK alternative–called MacCaching. it imports and exports and does a lot of stuff that gsak does.
now i need to find a mapping replacement for city select. something that will send maps to the gps, and allow me to plan out my caches on the computer. what are you other mac cachers using?11/21/2007 at 4:51 am #1881343I have a mac but am very computer illiterate. I don’t even know where to start most of the time. Terms and abbreviations drive me nuts. To me it’s like trying to read the small print in a contract. I can read something a dozen times and still have no idea what they are talking about. Anyway, sorry I can’t be of any help. However, if you don’t mind, I would like to contact you sometime if the need arises.
11/21/2007 at 11:22 am #1881344OK, I have been waiting for someone to comment, but ……
I do not own a Mac, but here is a suggestion:
Open the Mac GSAK program and look at the export function. If it’s like the IBM GSAK it might show a list of mapping programs it can export to.
Keep us posted. I’m thinking of buying a iMac myself. Nice and compact, with the CPU and everything in a flat screen setup.
BTW, I have heard the new mac’s have an IBM chip, which allows it to open and run IBM programs.
11/21/2007 at 6:03 pm #1881345I’ve posted about this a couple of times, if you do a search on the site there are a bunch of links in some of the posts.
My main computer is a G4 mac, however for caching I’m using a 5+ year old dell laptop. I’ve searched for a long time for caching programs on the mac. There are a number but none that really stand out. there is one that will push the cache info ( description, hints, coords, etc) to your ipod via itunes so you can read it on the road. There are numerous ones that will transfer waypoints to your gps, bring down tracks, etc.
There are three mapping programs I’m aware of: macgpspro, routebuddy and route66. I’ve installed all of these at one point or another, but only on a desktop to see what they were like. Can’t say any one of them compare’s to delorme’s street atlas.
I’m not positive I’ve tried the maccaching software but it looks familiar.
The new mac’s are intel based and you can run windows applications.. BUT you have to do so using 1 of 3 ways:
1. Apple’s BootCamp which allows you to dual boot the mac, so you are in either windows or OSX.
2. Parallel’s Desktop – Allows you to run windows (and other os’s) as application in osx. You then can install gsak, delorme, etc and run them just like on a regular pc.
3. VMWare’s Fusion – Same as parallels but different vendor.I’ve not got internet at home right now, so can’t offer much help.
k0rpal has said he picked up a new mac a couple of weeks ago, maybe he’s found something new.
11/21/2007 at 9:00 pm #1881346i bought the fusion program. BUT you have to also have a copy of windows. and not just any copy that you have–it has to be a full install and not OEM. i was trying to use my upgrade install and it won’t work. i’m looking for a copy of windows xp on ebay right now, but so far i haven’t won any bids.
i’ll spend some time looking at the mac caching program in the future and the suggestion for looking at what it exports to is a good one. i’ll try that.
11/21/2007 at 9:09 pm #1881347When I started caching (way back in the day) all I had was a Mac. There weren’t any good programs, so I went out and got a Windows based laptop for primarily the purposes of caching.
I’m on my second laptop now and haven’t really pursued anything on my Mac. The Mac is close to 10 years old now and still running well, I might add. The Windows laptops seem to have not as long of a life.
When I was between laptops I was able to utilize a program that converted pocket queries for use with cachemate (MCMconverter, or something to that effect). But that may not be a used program anymore.
Congrats on your Mac purchase. This has been an interesting topic!
