By the way – for those who do get an Explorist 400,500,or 600 and look in vain for a description in the owner’s manual for attaching the data/recharge cable, the cable should be oriented DOWN the back, not up.

I originally purchased an explorist 300. I exchanged and upgraded it for the 600. I have 2 weeks to use or exchange it for another unit. I also like the Garmon 60cs, that has more options, but I don’t think the screen is as good as resolution and clearity as the 600. Has anyone any other comments about the screens and clearity on both these units?

Sorry Cathunter, I misread. I haven’t tried the map software yet, if I open the package, I will need to pay a restock charge, incase I decide to exchange the unit. In reference to both units screens (600 vs 60cs) on side by side comparing, the 600 seems to have more vivid, crisp clean fonts for easy reading (letters and arrow). The compas and map screens clearly reveal this. The 60cs has some nicer options in summary of time, distance, average speed, etc. I’m still deciding on which unit. Can one change the font and resolution of the screen on the 60cs?

I did buy it and so far I like it. It did have a learning curve since it was such a new unit and magellan had alot of questions piled on them at once. I dont think they were prepared. Only thing I dont like is that Magellans mapping program that I also purchased, you have to save it to your computer hard drive, then load it to the GPS with a conversion program provided. So basically the mapping program isnt compatible with USB so the conversion is neccessory. So other then that, the screen is great, Nice and crisp. Rechargable battery is also nice. Just charge when neccessory. I got about 12 hours on a full charge one day. Just got to conserve the backlight and use when neccessory. Hope that helps, but if you use yahoo, go to the site, then click on Groups, then type in Explorist 600. This will send you to the group that has alot of FAQ questions and answers about the explorist.

Minnesota lurker here. Yes, you must hold the Garmin 60CS GPS level to get the compass to work. I might add this also applies to geocaching mode, in which a red arrow is superimposed over the compass and points to the destination waypoint. I’m new to GPS-ing, and geocaching. I have been using a Garmin 60cs. It is the only GPS I’ve ever used and I’ve never used the mapping software, so I can’t compare it to anything else. There was a brief review of several units (including 60cs and 600) in a recent issue of Money magazine. FWIW the author of the review, who was also a neophyte, had a slight preference for the 600, based mainly on the lower MSRP. He didn’t use or review any optional mapping software.
