I’ve written here about a problem with cachers who move our caches to make them “more winter friendly”….in June. We’ll have to get out there soon and get it back where it was placed, as the area is heavily hunted and we don’t want it taken.
So now I’m noticing another phenomenon as we do maintenance checks on our caches. One had a log book added. Why? I don’t know. There was a perfectly fine dry log book in the cache already, with plenty of room for signatures. That’s not so bad, it just creates the situation that we won’t have to replace the log for that much longer.
We went to replace a full log on another, and really couldn’t see why it was full, looking at the online logs and knowing what we’d put there. When we pulled it, we could see why. The log sheet had clear duct tape pasted to the back side, so no signatures could be added to it. It was not a problem log, no comments about it getting wet and no indication that it ever had.
I know folks are well intentioned, but what is the point of this? Especially in cases that force the cache owner to make another visit?

10/05/2010 at 12:42 am #1936864We will replace a log if the original is completely soaked to the point that we can not save the original, if we can dry the original out with our defrosters we will, and leave the original there. Very rarely we will replace a bad container if they are completely water logged. Usually we will OK it with the cache owner if we know about it prior to our visit.

10/05/2010 at 3:12 pm #1936866Never a problem with us to replace wet logs and such. We do the same when we can. I don’t understand the adding of stuff that’s not needed. In one of these cases, it actually required a visit by us sooner, rather than being helpful.
Oh well. At least it tells us there are those who try to help, which is a good thing.
