How nice it has been enjoying the high 80 degree temps and kicking back in the sand in Mexico. While on a little biking adventure with my wife we stopped at the southern end of Isla Mujeres and went on the walkway between the cliffs and the caribbean and ran into a plaque in the side of the cliff stating that we were standing at the eastern most point of Mexico and gave the coordinates. While everyone knows that geocaching.com hates both virtuals and vacation caches, this one was too neat to pass up. Seemed that every geocacher likes locations like this. So I added some of the other sites in the area to a new virtual and submitted it to see what would happen. Care to guess?
The reply indicated that they archived it (no surprise) but the reason did surprise me, they stated that there was no way to maintain this cache since it was a vacation cache. Hmmmm hope nobody moves the easternmost point of Mexico any time soon.
They also indicated that they wanted to reserved this site for local geocachers to use in either a regular cache or part of a multi. Seems rather comical since there are only 3 caches within 40 miles of the mexican vacation mecca and there will not be any more soon from the looks of it. The average Mexican down here would have to lay out a months salary just for a GPS much less the other costs of hiding caches.
I know , rules are rules but I think geocaching.com may be missing something here and is being a bit shortsighted.03/21/2004 at 3:28 pm #174649403/21/2004 at 4:04 pm #1746495Oh, forgot to say:
Most of the GC.com Admins have “canned” emails that apply to the usual type of emails we send out. We also have a nifty little program that lets you “check” the box for the different guidelines that apply for the particular cache, and the program will generate the canned email.
Reading the response you got, I’m guessing your cache may have been subject to the canned email. In general it probably applies to your cache, but some of it may not.
Just a guess…
03/21/2004 at 4:32 pm #1746496Thanks for the info Brian. It just seemed like such a natural place for cachers to visit. With only three caches within 40 miles and already having done one, I thought one more would be a benefit.
I have been to some of the virtuals that probably do not even warrant a oh , much less a wow and am glad to see these going away.
Cachew did the one cache I did on his visit to Mexico a few weeks back and I think would agree that there is a need for more caches down this way.
Right now I only have 5 miles of water keeping me from the other two.03/21/2004 at 4:52 pm #1746497I know when I’m out of town, I’m glad to be able to find ANY cache that is nearby. I almost think an arguement could be made for a VC, if there aren’t any regular caches within “X” miles. But that’s something GC would need to change.
