It’s been a year since we started geocaching and we have been waiting anxiously for the first few days of September to revisit Belle’s Cache(GCGM6K) near Oakfield. The walk to the cache takes you through a monarch butterfly staging area, where hundreds of these beauties gather before flying to Mexico.
We were wondering if any other cachers have come across a similar area somewhere in Wisconsin?
We will be checking this spot over the next few weeks, watching for their return (The hide there is a good one, too!). If they arrive, we will post a message here, if anyone would like to see this amazing sight.08/22/2008 at 1:13 pm #1894740That sounds like an awesome cache! I’d love to take my family to see that. Please do post here when the monarchs are there, i’d be very grateful for the info!
08/22/2008 at 3:00 pm #1894741Me 2! Can you e-mail me when they are there? I am not sure if I would check this soon enough and would love to see that. [email protected]
08/22/2008 at 9:17 pm #1894742On a recent visit to Seri’s Health Plan (now archived), we saw many Monarch butterflies sampling the milkweed.
08/28/2008 at 6:17 pm #1894743🙄 Visited “Belle’s Cache” today. No butterflies yet! We will keep you posted!
09/07/2008 at 1:57 am #1894744The hurricane remnants may have altered the Monarch’s pattern this year. On Friday there were a few in the staging area, but they were very restless. Maybe next year! 🙁
09/14/2008 at 9:29 pm #1894745There is an article in the Sunday paper today about the Monarchs on the “Monarch Trail” whihc starts just west of the Milwaukee County Parks Department headquarters on Watertown Plank Road. I am not familiar with that area and not sure if there are any caches on that trail, but apparently they are there right now according to the article. I hope someone else who is familiar with this will post and know what/where this is??? Thanks! 😀
09/14/2008 at 11:38 pm #1894746I saw that article too Laurell and it looks like a great spot to visit (though I hope the area does not become too popular now and is not inundated with visitors that destroy things).
Here is a link to a trail map:

This page shows the historical arrival and departure dates of the butterflies… usually they take off in the middle of September so you’d have to act fast.

The parking lot starting coords would be:
N43 02.773 W88 01.978
There are actually no caches along the butterfly trail, but there are some in Hansen Park to the north.
09/14/2008 at 11:49 pm #1894747😀 Thanks Jeremy! The cache will have to be finding a beautiful garden of butterflies! Sounds like the weather will be nice next week so I will have to go check it out. 8)
09/15/2008 at 12:36 am #1894748Maybe there is still hope at Belles Cache! I’ll check it out again soon.
09/19/2008 at 4:23 am #1894749Jeremy and I checked out the Monarch Trail in Milwaukee this past Wednesday. We saw a grand total of 2 Monarch butterfies. Last week’s cooler temps probably made the majority take off for Mexico already, and it was also a little windy on the day we visited which they don’t like. Here’s a picture I took…
