I have a 60 CSx and the kids each have a Legend. I’m using the Topo software that came with one of the legends but that doesn’t allow autorouting on the 60 CSx. We’re planning on a geocaching trip across the country this summer and I’d like to pick up some better software prior to leaving. When I read the information pages it is a little confusing. It seems that MetroGuide would work with both the Legends and the 60 but that you would not have autorouting on the 60? CitySelect allows for autorouting on the 60 but the Legend is not listed as being compatible. So, the question is this- Can you load the Cityselect maps on the Legend? I realize that you won’t have autorouting but are there other issues, such as using up large amounts of memory so you would have very little area in a Legend?
Basically I’m asking if my understanding is correct and if anyone has first-hand experience with loading MetroGuide and/or CitySelect into Legend units.
Thanks for any help!
05/16/2006 at 2:46 am #1741416you are right, metroguide doesn’t allow auto routing.
If you are talking the grey scale legend it only has 8mb of map storage. this is really not enough for use with city select, plus the legend can’t do autorouting. city select allows two units to be unlocked for use with maps, would you really want to unlock it for a unit that couldn’t even auto route? metroguide on the other hand is just like the topo you have, and is fully unlocked.
also you may not have noticed, but city select is being discontinued in favor of city navigator, I beleive that version 7 is out, but version 8 is due out shortly.
If I were you I would just let the kiddies use topo and buy myself the city navigator verison 8 when it comes out.
05/16/2006 at 12:50 pm #1741417I have Navigator v7 and it works slick. I use it for work too and have been able to find obscure little addresses as well with autorouting. Just be careful looking for Navigator, I found mine for just a hair over 100, while some places are charging 120-150. Good luck!
05/18/2006 at 2:20 pm #1741418I heard today that the new version of City Navigator – 8, is being sent out to stores right now and will be available within the next 10 days to two weeks. I am waiting…
“ARGH – I know it’s here somewhere…”05/20/2006 at 11:26 pm #1741419Thank you for the information. I had the chance to ride along with Mr. Honeybunny the other night and see Navigator working in his 60CSx. I didn’t know about only being able to “unlock” a certain amount of units. I didn’t know about Navigator. It seems like the thing to do is to keep on running the topo software in the Legends and get Navigator for my 60CSx. Again, thanks so much for the help!
05/23/2006 at 11:18 pm #1741420When doing a google search there are a lot of web sites selling Garmin units, map software, and accessories. Anybody have any good or bad exeriences with any of them. I’d like to avoid the one and experience the other.
Thanks!
05/24/2006 at 11:14 pm #1741421If you are buying software, it probably doesn’t matter, but if you are buying another GPSr, you need to make sure that you are buying from an “authorized dealer”. I made the mistake of buying a 60CSx on Ebay, which turned out to be defective, and almost ended up eating it when I found that Garmin will not honor a warranty for units not bought from authorized dealers. If they are authorized it will usually say on the website.
