      I’m working with a small group of 4th graders in an after school “tutoring” program. Basically, we find activities that will help them learn stuff from class in different ways and have fun.

      So…..I’m thinking when the weather gets warm again, that setting up various types of caches on the school property and working through that would be fun. Because this relates to map skills and geography, it would be great to have maps for them to study as well as using the units. Are there good sites without tons of extra stuff where I could input my coordinates and then print it out? Can that be done with google maps? If so, how?

      We’ll be birding and geocaching as soon as the snow is gone, can’t wait! Thanks.

      Expert GPS does this very nicely. It costs 50 bucks but you can download a free 30 day trial. Note that at first it has a “base map” that is just plain white background. But go to the view tab and you can click on topo or aerial photo. You can print them out. After they go do the caches you could also upload their tracks- they would probably think it was very cool to see their tracks heading to the caches.

      T&B;

      I am a HUGE fan of Expert GPS, but it does carry a price tag. Also, both the sat and topo maps are somewhat outdated.

      You can use Google Earth to do this, which is free so long as you trust Google or don’t mind that they’re probably spying on you. 😯

      Using Google Earth, just choose “Add Placemark” from the “Add” menu and enter waypoints. When you’re done, print your map.

      Or, you can upload a .kml file or a GPX file to Google Earth.

      If you don’t want to use Google Earth and don’t have Expert GPS, I’d be happy to make a jpg satellite or topo map (or both) for you. Just send me a list of waypoints.
