A very special congratulations goes out to Bob (seekers8711) for tackling Match Head at the very young age of 70! I was lucky enough to go along for the trip, and Bob was like a billy goat out there. He did this one all on his own, and we have the pic’s to prove it! I believe Bob is the eldest person to date to tackle this cache, so it’s an amazing achievement! His log and pics are bellow. Congrats again Bob, I had a blast.

“I ALWAYS CARRY MY POCKET KNIFE”
Back in mid October, Pretty One & I came down here to grab this cache. We’re not afraid of ***** terrain or ***difficulty. Boy, did we learn what ‘tough’ really is. Found Ground Zero and down I went for the find, or so I thought. After about a half hour of crawling around in small places that I shouldn’t even attempt, I got my boot stuck between some rocks. No problemo, just cut the shoelace, extract foot from boot and all is good. Well, “wrong”. “Couldn’t reach the knot due to the cramped quarters & ” I HAD LEFT MY POCKET KNIFE AT HOME”. So I struggled for almost an hour until I finally got my foot loose. Exhausted and frustrated we gave up and I didn’t post a DNF. 0 for 1

    “Remember GORDON LIGHTFOOT???”

His hit song about the Edmund Fitsgerald sinking in Lake Superior was right on the money as I came down ALONE on 6 November and was greeted by 2-3 foot waves and wind. Again no problem, I will be under the rocks so all will be OK. WRONG again. Each time a big wave hit the rocks, much of it penetrated into the caverns below, so I was soaked within minutes. Alone is NOT the safest way to attempt this cache. So only gave a half hour attempt and went home soaked, exhausted and now I am 0 for 2.

    “GIT-‘R-DONE” day today

GOT-‘R-DONE on a beautiful day. I had checked with the owner to be sure cache was OK prior to my driving from north of Madison to the cache site. To my suprise, he offered to meet me at the site. I had brought some special equipment from home, (honest), to assist me with locating GZ when under the rocks. (Worked ike a charm, too).

Long story short, I used my two GPS units and his to triangulate GZ as closely as possible. Then I used my special equipment and began the hard work. I didn’t think that at 6′-1″ & 220 pounds could get into some of those small cracks, but I managed with lots of grunts & groans. Found cache after a bit of hard work, signed log & left 2 trackables for my accomplishment. At age 70, Jay, the owner, says I probably am the oldest person to find the cache entirely by myself. the addition of my 220 # is close to a maximum to fit in the small areas down there. Jay used my camera to take pix of the old guy coming out of the subterrianian ‘underworld’. Will post pix soon.

Took nothing and left a TB and a Geocoin. It was a big challange & accomplishment that happened and the Smiley doesn’t hurt either,

Thanks for the visit Jay, encouraging me to keep going. You have a cache well deserving of it’s COTM and COTY 2 years ago.

    GOT-‘R-DONE today.

Notice how the GC# ends with “EEK”, I planed it that way cause this ones not for the weak, weary or faint of heart. LOL 😀

Actually never noticed the eek in until now, and the cache is 4 years old. Yeah, I’m observant.

One is only as old as one chooses to feel. Way to go….we hope to tackle that one someday ourselves. Thanks for setting a great example for aging with vigor!

That is an awesome story. Hope to hit a few good ones when I am 70 as well. Very cool.
