hmmm, is the mud caused by dirty trails or unclean rain?

Great question CB&MB! It doesn’t seem to make much sense to ask it at first …. but then when you compare it side by side with this … “then why is there not a pile of mulch under a tree when IT gets wet” … the paradox, and the thus the need for the question, becomes much more important in life. The other week while judging for Science Fair at my daughter’s school … I asked her if when a man says something in the woods and no one is there to here it, is he still wrong? … she said “yes, because sooner or later a woman will find out what he said!” … so there you are, there is no such thing as a bad question. The ground on a trail is compacted by people walking on it and less able to absorb water. Since most people walk in the center of the trail, it forms a depression towards the center that holds even more water, making older trails more muddy in the middle. This has such an effect out West where plant life is fragile that driving a 4×4 off-road just once can create a new drainage in the tracks. (The effect is best seen over a period of years at higher elevation on a steep slope.)

This is the first time I have laughed aloud while reading the forums in some time. Thanks cacherchick!
