Memories of 2009

Well, because zuma suggested it…I’ll start it off…

Lonely caching took several forms for our team. Much was done by me solo. Some was done as a family. And some was done as a husband-wife team. So, the best memories of the lonely caching season are the gnarly puzzles we worked as a team to solve (the bulk of which are seldom|seen’s, unsurprisingly) and the seldom-visited caches and places we got to discover for ourselves.

We were also proud to have completed 23 cache rescues in 2009!

I could list any number of caches that were a memorable experience, but what’s most interesting to other people are the unusual or funny things that happened along the way. So here are the ones that fit the bill:

Knarly Knoll I | Obelisk (GCZERR) – Got the wife’s Sebring convertible stuck on “Schultz Drive” thinking it was a great idea to drive on an unplowed logging road in late March. Made it out by the grace of God and a bundle of discarded roofing shingles. Ran back to get the cache and came within 12 inches of a porcupine at the final. -edit- I am advised to tell you that the missus was NOT along for this misadventure, as if there were any doubt 🙄

Lookout Above II | Last One Standing (GCKJ6W) – The owner advised me not to do this one in winter. I didn’t listen. Ooooh…the river is over my knee boots! Hmmmm…how about if I strip to my tighty-whities and wade out to that island in bare feet in barely-above-freezing water. That sounds like a great idea! No I do not have pictures (but I did find the cache). -edit- Uhhhh…see above.

SirCumference’s Challenge (GCXX3H) – Part of a day-long adventure that started with me flying the family in the mighty Cessna out to Wausau. What a great day of caching.

Long Tail Point Lighthouse 1899 (GCXHNH) – Borrowed a friend-of-a-friend’s boat and “hired” a captain–“Captain Jack” (really!). Paid him in Heineken. Found the cache and scored bonus points. Woot!

Down the trail (GCEE3D) – Terrain 1.5, let’s take the family on a nice little hike. Ok…where’s the trail??? Waist high grass (WET, of course)…stinging nettle…”Trust me kids it’s just a little further!” This is one the kids still complain about. But fondly I’m sure. Check out the log and pictures.

We only played the LCG for the last 2 monthes of 2008, and that was good practice for ’09!
Attending the LCG Event in January was a real treat, and brought cachers in from around the state, inspite of the snow.
Our favorite of the bunch was “Message in a Bottle” (GCN156). It took a few trips and a little hunting,but finding the old “bottle” was fun.
Completing 15 Cache Rescues on the year helped keep the geotrash out of Mother Nature’s backyard. Who needs to buy containers when you can get free ones from old geobeacons?!
The best LCG day was Black Friday, when the Jim half headed to Zumaland, and found 22 of 25 Lonely Caches, while dodging deer hunters. Left at 4AM and got home at 7PM, tired, but satisfied.
Looking forward to the ’09 Event in the Dells. Hope to see a bunch of you there! 😀
