    Michael Harris – Team Northwoods

I started geocaching back in 2006. My first cache was up on the Lake Nebagamon shoreline among some huge remnant White Pines. A few after that was on top of the Silver Cliff Tunnel along the North Shore. Unique places and big caches. With few caches back home I took a sabbatical from caching for a while.

Shortly after meeting my wife in 2010, I wanted to show her the northwoods. Her being from the cities and all. Geocaching was the best way I could think of. For us these were not paperless days. Caches were tough and hard to come by. They were always up hill and under at least 2 feet of snow. That same year I wanted to take her into this little water fall on a small tributary that ran into a canyon. No caches, no trail, and all bushwacking. I knew that if I had a cache this is where I wanted it to be. 50 cal. ammo can in tow it was placed above the falls. We had no food and one bottle of water and only an 8 mile round trip. That will test a new relationship. If you see comkelp and Wis Wild Weasel ask them about that cache. They went in with only a warm can of root beer. On September 4th, 2010 is when GC2ENJQ Grundy Canyon, Cascading Waterfall was published and an addiction was born.

Geocaching always has a log around you somewhere begging for some ink. Containers stowed and stuffed into nooks and cranny’s everywhere. And I am one of the pushers. I want a cache on every corner and one in every yard. Not really but we could be the reason The Plastic Exchange has an uptick each the summer. That’s probably not true. But I digress.

As of today I have placed 858 caches with 3 more in the queue. When will it stop only maintenance will tell? Last year I hosted 6 events and placed 550 caches. Don’t worry, I am having a hard time believing it too but you can’t argue with GSAK. The GC5AXC4 Blue Hills Series consists of 386 caches of all different types, sizes, terrain and difficulty. The GC5J2F9 TNBL: Series is at 159 caches soon to be 162 caches strong. I really enjoy getting feedback from finders and do incorporate it into future caches.

Some of the events, GC4R676 Grundy Canyon Event, had attendees from over 200 miles away and almost all had attendees from over 100 miles away. I consider that pretty good. My main events are different than ones I have gone too. Hiking, caching, and bantering our way into unique areas and sometimes in unique ways. I really got something special brewing for an event soon. Hopefully this year if I can pull it off. Last year I was teasing that I had a secret plan and then started to publish the Blue Hills series; this is not like that. I really enjoy events and hiding; I learn a lot. It makes me into a better hider and a better host.

Why accept the nomination for the Wisconsin Geocaching Association? Over the years I have grown to love the hide as much as the find. I think it will be fun and challenging. I already enjoy contributing to this sport, hobby, addiction we all love and what better way than being on the Wisconsin Geocaching Association Board of Directors.

    Thank you,
    Team Northwoods
