08/19/2011 at 3:23 pm #1951683Good, I wasn’t sure if it would be accessible outside my credentials. Never tried to share one before. Thanks, Dave ๐
08/20/2011 at 1:50 am #1951684Thanks gmo. Looks like caching may be out. Church friend if my wife’s lost her battle with cancer and funeral is Monday. So we are trying to lead foot it back
08/20/2011 at 1:52 am #1951685Sorry to hear that.
08/20/2011 at 10:12 am #1951686We’ve had a lot of fun caching all over the UP. Even if you scale back to just driving back via Highway 2 it’s worthwhile, much of it following the Lake Michigan shoreline. For me, the drive from the bridge to Manistique is a real sentimental favorite. Not a lot of knockout caches on that stretch though. The lighthouse virtual in Manistique is really pleasant with a walk out on the breakwater. Drop a line once you’ve chosen a route.
08/20/2011 at 2:51 pm #1951687We had a great week in the UP last month with the Geodogs near Ishpeming.
A really fun one was:
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=220f3836-c953-459a-a941-3fe25a93cb5a Moose Rapids Campground. We had read the description before we went up and were quite intrigued by this instruction: “To find this cache you WILL NEED 1 GALLON BUCKET AND A TOWEL OR A CLOTH”. A very unique hide!We also went on a bit of a waterfall quest while we were there – found a number of them, and there was not one person in sight at any of them!!
Our favorite was Adler Falls. Gorgeous, and you can wander all over around the falls, upper and lower. Make sure you find the right trail head (see our post with the sign to look for!). Very short hike (if you find the correct trail!), a bit steep at the end, but not too bad.
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=77a6ea0a-2dc5-40ba-a05a-70528d45971bEly Falls is dear to our hearts, because this was our 100th find! ๐ Nice little hike in, and really interesting huge pink granite rocks to climb on. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=b9dd7be4-a877-4257-b2d6-861a5eba10d1
Reany Falls was very beautiful as well – they list the terrain as 3.5 which is weird because it is basically a park and grab! You walk into the woods about 100ft and there are the falls! Super quick find, and gorgeous falls.
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=62df8720-d675-452d-9a0c-77a7e0926aa1A really amazing Earth Cache was “The World’s Largest Gemstone”. We had never seen anything like this rock formation! Vibrant layers of red, and a great lookout point. Short hike up. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=795ec046-6d87-444b-ac64-959dd934a0fd
ETA – Just saw your follow up post about your loss, sorry to hear it.
08/24/2011 at 9:03 pm #1951688Thanks everyone for your great suggestions! I wish I could visit them ALL!! But I’ve had to choose those that are closest to our route and fit the family’s style. This weekend is the big weekend (actually it’s Monday & Tuesday but we leave tomorrow night) and I’m REALLY looking forward to seeing your recommendations! I’ll try to take lots of photos. I’m sure they’ll be on Facebook for those of you who know me there. I’ll put some here too.
Thanks again! ๐
I will NOT be doing http://www.geocaching.com/challenges/view.aspx?cx=CXD37 or http://www.geocaching.com/challenges/view.aspx?cx=CXA8F (Good thing they’re not concerned about duplicate challenges!)
08/25/2011 at 1:56 am #1951689I echo thb’s comments we got to the bridge at sunset and drove that stretch of hwy 2 chasing the sun We stopped twice and slowed often ( when safe to of course ) Maybe it was my wife’s friend saying thanks for getting home on Monday morning at 142am
08/31/2011 at 7:48 pm #1951690WHEW! Wow, what a trip but we made it back. I haven’t even logged my finds yet. We did get to everything on the list but we did see alot of cool places thanks to your recommendations ๐ We saw cool waterfalls, neat parks, beaches, cliffs, etc. We explored alot of places and took alot of pictures and had a great time! Thanks all for your help! ๐
