There is a cool movie called “Winged Migration” that just came out on DVD. The cinematography of the migrating birds is incredible. They should probably make another documentary to show all the flying machines they made to get the cameras up in the sky to follow and film our feathered friends!

If anyone gets the chance to come over to the LaCrosse area in the next couple of weeks, there are an estimated 90+ species of birds that will be going through the area…the “pike” between LaCrosse and LaCrscent, MN had at least 40 species viewable, yesterday according to my DNR friends…

A big Thank You to GrouseTales for the Audio link of the drumming grouse. While out scouting new cache hides I was able to identify fo r the first time ever what I am nearly certain were grouse off in the distance. Very cool.

    Thanks!

    You’re welcome!

I bet a lot of people have heard this and had no idea what it was. To us dyed in wool grouse fanatics, it’s music to our ears

If you are in the woods at the crack of dawn, you often hear 3 birds competing against each in a calling contest. The barred owl, wild turkey and ruffed grouse all seem to spar off with their calls.

The turkey will gobble in response to barred owl hooting. The grouse start drumming when the turkey starts gobbling. It’s like they are all yelling “hey, I’m here too”.

Turkey hunters use owl calls to locate the turkeys early in the morning. We blow the barred owl’s tell-tale call: “who cooks for you, who cooks for your all” and any self respecting tom turkey in the area will answer by gobbling. Then Mr. ruffed grouse starts drumming in response.

Many times when turkey hunting, I will sit down in the woods and start making turkey calls. Instantly the ruffed grouse in the area start drumming. It’s like they can’t stand someone making noise in their neck of the woods. The need to speak up an let us know the are here.

I love camping in the spring. The best part is laying in your tent just before dawn, and hearing the owls, turkeys and grouse all sounding off. Music to my ears!
