Has anyone ever kept track of the miles that they walk in a weekend of heavy caching, We went to Marquette for a long weekend from Friday to Sunday and got 125 smiley’s.

Before we left we reset the Trip counter on the Nuvi and the 550. There was a 22.5 Mile difference. Between the two.

and the way my legs feel, it was all uphill. and if you have cached in Marquette, you would understand.

Has anyone else kept track like this???

I did that a couple weekends ago when I cached in Janesville with lagrac. We did 80 caches and I had a difference of 13.9 miles in a single day. Yup, tired would sum it up!

Those short .1 walks add up quickly

All the while the signal on your hand held bounces around on those wooded trails under the tree canopy, take in to consideration that all those little jumps (30 feet either side) will have an effect on your total distance traveled.

I’ve inadvertently left my GPSr powered on in the house. In just a short time, the GPS had “traveled” several hundred miles just sitting on the kitchen table.

Humm… So you have a machine that over time can travel a great distance of space.

I wear a pedometer for a walking challenge that I am doing through work. One day while caching in Muskegon, MI last month I walked 16,000 steps while caching during the day. Assuming a 2.5 ft stride length, I walked approximately 7.5 miles that day. Of course I am 6’2, so my stride length is usually a little longer than 2.5 feet. 😀

I did a few times last year when we started caching. Generally we did between 3.5 and 5 miles a day during cooler weather. Less on hot and humid days.

We went to Governor Dodge State Park this weekend. We stopped for a few caches on the way. We logged 7 smileys and 7.1 miles on foot. The 42 inch, five-year-old was a bit tired on the way home.

A couple of times I’ve used delorme and satellite maps to do an approximation of distance walked, if you can get them overlaid so the scale is about the same you can get a fair number.

In most cases its generally close to what the gps “tracks” report.

I know we’ve walked 7-10 miles for a single smiley a few times. And then there’s the time we tried the first time to get a tough one near Faribault MN, whiffed on it, then started walking along the Sakatah Lake trail, finding one cache after the other, ending up at the state park, getting the coordinates there for the challenge cache and a couple others, then heading back to where we’d parked. The trail markers showed we’d walked almost ten miles out…and of course back again. Nuts!

We like to walk, hike, bike and paddle. What can I say? It would be interesting to see how much ground we cover on some of the days where we think we aren’t walking all that much, because like someone said, all those short hikes add up over a day’s time. It’s always great to walk or bike more and limit the trips in and out of the car when we can.
