As some of you may know, WGA was contacted awhile back by the Minnesota geocaching association regarding some issues in their state related to geocaching. I just came across this on a Minnesota cacher’s profile, and thought it was an interesting followup to their sitaution. Plus its more information related to our work with the DNR.

    quote:

The short story is that on April 1st (2003), Ramsey County (and others ??) will be enacting registration of caches. There are banned parks/open spaces. There are limits on # of caches in an area, and the distance between. There is a
limit of “two caches per park per cache owner” and a county wide limit of “5 per cache owner”.

This is in ‘draft’ form now, but most likely it will be very similar to that. The info will be on the Minnesota GeoCaching Association website.

I see this as just one more set of rules that may or may not be enforced equally among parks. On the other hand, I see this as a way for the parks to generate income. First permits then comes the cash for permits? I guess this sounds somewhat negative. Maybe becasue I need to get out geocaching, while it is still free.

Personally, I’ll take rules anyday considering that the probably alternative from property managers is “keep out!”

Seeing these points about MN GCing, and a recent thread on the Groundspeak forum, where do we as the WGA stand currently in our talks with the WIDNR? I’m just curious because I haven’t heard anything lately.

Thanks for asking. Grouse Tales and I have been invited to attend a DNR meeting in January to discuss the proposal. The specific date is still being worked out. We’ll keep you posted about what happens at the meeting and what the next steps are after that.

Thanks Ken for the info, I’ll stay posted.

Say… what is your gut feeling with the DNR’s attitude now that there has been a changing of hands with the new govenor? I saw in the paper today that Doyle has appointed his new head of the DNR. Just curious if this change may mean a different direction from where we were headed with them.

I know we’ve run into some word that a few of our projects at work may be on thin ice with the new govenor and staff.

    Wondering…

It’s an interesting question, but I would hope and think the new DNR chief would be too busy to worry about “minor” issues such as geocaching. I’m guessing he will leave the geocaching policy up to his subordinates.

We’ll have to keep our fingers crossed on this one. Hopefully the transition will be seamless, especially for us geocachers.
I didn’t know if you had heard anything in regards to changes in the DNR office or not. I guess hearing nothing is better. I had never given the whole governor thing any thought, until the whole work thing.

Funny, a new house doesn’t always need new curtains!

    Thanks!

It looks like the Minnesota group is officially organized. I like how they have established a governing board. This is something we should move toward.

Read more about in the minutes of their December meeting: http://www.mngca.org/minutes-121102.asp

FREE??? Between the bandaids, the GPS, the boots, the snacks, the trade items, the asprin, the park permits, the bug repellant, the sun block… How can you say this is “free”? Just teasing guys…

I was interviewed last week by a Minnesota public radio station about the geocaching policy in Wisconsin. While the reporter ended up not using any of my sound bites because she decided to focus on Minnesota policy, she did a nice piece on Minnesota, which aired July 21. You can go to this page to hear the audio archive: http://www.kfai.org/kfai2/audarch.htm
click on KFAI Evening News – Monday – most recent show. Good news is that geocaching is no longer banned in Minnesota, but you need a permit.

    Ken,

Thanks for posting. Unfortunately, the site appears to be trying to force me to download a 14-day trial version of RealOne player in order to listen to the blurb. Thanks but no thanks.

    Steve:

Realplayer has a free player, they just put the licensed one in front of everything to get you to buy it.

See this page on the right side for the free player.

Be aware that the free Realplayer contains Spyware, the one reason I personaly refuse to use it.
