06/16/2010 at 3:39 pm #1931170Considering that most all of touristy DC area is a national park or national monument – physical caches are not allowed. What’s nice is that most of the virtuals are near, at, or on the way as you walk around the Mall. They are pretty much set up so you can sight see and geocache at the same time. We got quite a few of them but not all as we were interested in grabbing some of the benchmarks in the area as well.
Plan for tired feet if you choose to walk the area. 🙂 Have fun and let me know if the opened up the grass area in the mall yet.
06/16/2010 at 3:56 pm #1931171I did a bunch of DC virtuals when I was driving through in late 2008. I got to town around 7pm or so, which was great since all of the parking opened up after business hours. I’m sure I didn’t look a bit suspicious wandering around looking at things with my flashlight…
06/16/2010 at 4:22 pm #1931172I have done a few of these…just be careful bout walkin round late at night…it can get a bit unruly in the city at night. I have felt much safer in most other citys at night than I felt in DC.
06/16/2010 at 4:29 pm #1931173Am I better off trying to drive in and find a place to park, or parking at a train station and taking the train in?
06/16/2010 at 6:25 pm #1931174Take the train!!!
06/16/2010 at 9:19 pm #1931175I love Washington DC I have over 40 Virts done in the DC area. It is just a blast!! Start at one end of the mall ( I would start at the Capitol Building) And just walk towards the Lincoln Memorial. or (vice versa) There are 10 or so right on the mall and 20-30 more just off of the mall. Most are really easy that just need a photo or what was the date of the memorial type of thing. Once you are done you can get on the subway and easily get back to were you started. If you have any questions PM me. My mom lived out there for 4 years and I have been there 10 times in the last 4 years. ( last july was the last time)
06/16/2010 at 11:07 pm #1931176Oh, parking. I’m not sure. We drove in from Baltimore and had a place to park everytime thanks to family connections. I do know we did lots of walking. I’m not sure for all parts of DC, but my family and I felt pretty safe in the vicinity of the Mall late at night.
06/17/2010 at 2:20 am #1931177I did one while there the one at the lincoln memorial, it was hot and humid and we walked a lot… the size of the monuments makes the distance between them deceiving….
We were in the area until 8 or 9, lots of people around until then. About the only person who made us feel nervous was this big biker who was vending POW material.
I thought only virtuals were allowed in the dc area but maybe its just on the mall grounds as there are others outside it.
