If it is any consolation, all 4 of the virts recently archived were not particularly special, and in places where a traditional cache could be placed. So it is not that huge of a loss as one might think. Even so, it is a shame that the virts could not have be adopted out.
Maybe folks want to tell our German friends what they think about their action? Perhaps it wont do any good, but it felt right just now when I did so. I sent the following email to the last 4 Germans to post fake finds on the virtuals that were archived:
Hi,
While I respect the freedom we all have to cache the way we like to, I do want to call to your attention that your choice to log several virtual caches in Wisconsin led to those caches being archived.
I am sure that it was not your intent to get these caches archived, but you should know that actions have consequences, and the result of your choice to log caches that you did not actually visit has prevented other people from visiting these virtual caches in the future. In short, your choice has cheated your fellow cachers out of potential fun caches in the future, since they are now gone.
Please consider this email to be a polite request to cease and desist from the practice of logging virtual caches that you have not actually visited. This practice is damaging to the game, and has led many American cachers to have a dim view of our German friends who regularly do this.
Thank you,
zuma

Every time I read these 2 threads I shake my head and wonder why anyone does this? What purpose does it serve? Is it their way of flagging that they’ve read the virtual? Is it some sort of game within the game that were not privy to? It just makes no sense. Why stop at virtuals then? Why not just log found it logs on all types without visiting? I guess we’ll never know they ‘why’.
12/29/2009 at 2:10 pm #1918827I sent it to 4 people. One responded right away:
Hi zuma!,
thank you for this mail!!!
It wasn’t my intent to damage our game or make that caches will be archived and I’m so sorry about the things you tell me.
I’m absolutly with You this isn’t theway we should go and I will bring my kind of caching virts to line.
Dear zuma, I’m really really sorry about thisGreetings from Black Forrest

01/04/2010 at 9:39 pm #1918829Makes me wonder tho, if they were “with you”, why would they have armchair logged to begin with? Chances are they’re saying that because they were called out.
I’ll admit I was tempted to armchair log at least one virt in Michigan while I was on my run up to 100 last year, one that I had actually visited before I started caching, and that I have pictures of me at the sign, and even without that, I have the answer the owner requires. I kept myself honest tho and won’t log that cache until I have pictures of me with my GPS at the site.

The buck stops here. . .and gets entered into Where's George.
Where's George? Stimulating the economy one EMS'ed dollar at a time.

I know what ya mean. I visited the Mayan Ruins at Tulum (GC29B5) pre-caching down in Mexico and have the pics and the answer, and like you though about logging the virt there. But I hope to return some day, and it can wait until then.
