I am sitting here just thinking about past caching days and had a memory that will always stick with me. So I got to wondering what is every ones favorite cache?

I will start with mine. It was “Devils lake revisited GC4518.” I did this one with the biggest group that I have cached with to date. It was the group that I “survived” the Gauntlet with. We made the wander over to it by the suggestion of Jeremy, to remove the cache as it was in an SNA. We made the final trek to this cache and all the views along the way were just tremendous. I have hiked through this area before but it never amazes me how great that park is. But not only was it all the scenic beauty but it was spending time with many other cachers that frequent this board. In fact it was the day I turned into a Zuma Groupie and met the Jesse the caching hound. Da Bloodhound was present along with Coastiegirl, Bunny FU FU, Jeremy, The Appleton contingent that hauled me down there. Not to mention the rest of the gang. I think this was the Ideal cache for me to go find and with the perfect company.

OK now it is your turn? What was your favorite cache and why?

I wouldn’t call this my favorite cache, but it will be the most memorable for me. It was the first cache that me and my wife have ever done. I remember sitting and watching fox 6 and heard about Geo caching and said hey that sounds like fun and it is something me and my wife can do together. So over the next few days we went to store after store looking at gps devices. After about a week I found the one I liked. We then went on line to start looking for our first cache. We found it Grandma’s Home Cooking. It was close and seemed like it was going to be a fun one for our first cache. Off we went gps in hand clues everything we thought we needed. following the little arrow I said hun we must be close I keep walking around in this circle. Start looking and low and behold my wife yells out (really loud) I found it!!!!!And there it was I think she scared some golfers that were near the location. It was like Christmas and we were 6 again. The look on my wife face was priceless I wish I had a camera at that exact time. Well that would be the most memorable for me. If I had time my most favorite would be the first WGA picnic me and wife attended.

ha, ha…we’ve probably scared a few golfers too. 😀

My favorite is definitely Catch Me if You Can (GCQWMR). It was when we were still very new to geocaching. And our first cache that involved crossing water somehow. Only we didn’t know that until we got there.

We parked in a place I’m sure we weren’t supposed to park 8O, thankfully the person did not complain. In fact, everyone we met (almost) was super nice. We followed the arrow and noticed a nice little lsland out on Lake Noquebay. Hmmm…must be where it is. How do we get there. We asked someone that was getting ready to go out on his boat. No do. Then a guy asked what we were doing. We explained. He said you can use my paddle boat. Awesome! So we paddled our way out there, found the cache, and signed the log.

    It was a blast.

A first place and a close runner-up both involve portaging our children…

First place is GCZ94V, “Grand Chute’s Wild Side.” We were there in spring but the trail to this cache said “Trail Closed: Wet and Mucky.” After completing two of the other ones out here, we said, hey, these trails aren’t so bad, so we approached this cache from the back side. Yes, it was a bit mucky, but not too bad. Got to the cache ok. Then we started to head back following the “closed” trail.

We got quite a ways, and we probably should have gotten a clue when we found a pair of sandals mired in the muck in the middle of the trail. But, we could still make it through. But eventually we came to a point where it was a literal swamp, about 2 feet deep across the whole trail for about 50 feet. With 2 miles back the other way, but the parking lot just .1 mile the other, dad pulled off shoes and socks and shuttled the two kid cachers over piggy-back.

The other is GCJCAX, “Bog Walk.” Same story, different season. On the trail, but dad decided to take the shortcut. 🙄 Next thing you know, we’re in the swamp trying to pick our way across frozen sod outcroppings. Well, one wrong step and dad’s up to his knees in ice water. So, might as well ferry the kids over.

Get to the cache, and there it is, high and dry–just off the trail, had dad chosen to follow it… 😳

Too funny! We saw one of the same sandals when we did “Grand Chute’s Wild Side” last spring for a milestone! We used the high spots nearby off the path to skip around through that area. Among my all time favorites is, of course, “Nifty Fifty” by seldom|seen (GC1187E). It’s no secret any longer that this one is out quite a distance on Lake Winnebago, but just where is the question. When rsplash40 and I got the FTF last summer, he went over the edge of the boat in his diving gear and his arm hit the tether for the float suspended above the container in two seconds! What a lucky mark on a 5/5 cache!

CSI and I didn’t have an ice auger big enough to cut a hole I could fit through so we had to fish for it….The only reason I didn’t rank “nifty” as our most memorable cache is we didn’t have the whole family team along. (Mom-cacher thought we were nuts and she’s probably right.) But it definitely ranks as the find involving the most planning and the biggest assortment of equipment!!! 8)

I have been mulling this over since the post first came out. And I still trying to decide one particular cache.

Having found over 5000 is not the problem. The vast majority can be eliminated right away. It’s the dozen or so that remain…

One involved a great hike, another a spectacular view, another a funny story, another……

Well, you know how it goes.

So I have decided on Alicia Park (GCKC5M). 8/24/2004.

Went out caching with a neice, and when we approached the steep slope, down which the cache was located, we heard this thrashing in the bushes. Sounded like a bear!

    Turned out to be Miata!

Since the question is “Most Memorable” that helped me narrow down my list.

Ever notice that memorable caches are almost always memorable not because of the cache? I have logged extrordinary events on very ordinary caches. It’s really about the hunt and the people.

For this question, I decided on one that was built to be memorable. This one will probably always stand out in my memory no matter how many more Geocaches I find.

GC12FFY – The Old Man | Takes Shelter

Most cachers who have ventured to find this one will probably always remember it. Had I done this one alone, it would probably not be my most memorable.

Finding this one was like those commercials on TV right now where the parent walks in front of the reflective window holding their child’s hand and the parent becomes that little boy/girl again just for a little while. Finding this geocache was traveling back to my teenage years and “hanging out” with my son. It was challenging your best friend or daring them to do something you both know you should probably not be doing. “My mom will find out!”

There’s a reason this one won “Cache of the Month” back in January. For me that reason is highlighted above. Had I gone alone, it might still have been memorable but it just wouldn’t be the same.

This is just one of my favorites. It should be on the lonely cache hunt, but I don’t know how to get it there??? It is going to be back up soon. There is an awesome geoprize at the end for each cacher and I had a great time working out my brain and my legs for this one. GCV8ZY

My second favorite would be the history lesson of this one and the fact that we had titanic survivors here in WI. I had been to this cemetary many times and never realized that this was there. GC12M17 The cache at the end is TITANIC! 😀 😯

The owner would need to activate it for one thing…

He plans on it. This is a conservancy area that always closes for the winter months. Can I nominate it after the area reopens?

        #1886642

There is no nomination. If a cache hasn’t been found for a long time, it makes the list. Assuming no one goes out and finds it in April, it should be on the May/June list.

Ok, thanks! It is really is a nice cache, a bit of work, but worth it in the end. He has a nice treat in it for those who are willing to put the effort into it. 🙂

My most memorable cache was actually of a cache that I didn’t find, at least not until a few days later.

It was late afternoon or early evening. The sky was clouding up and it was quickly getting dark. You could smell that rain was on it’s way. One more cache to finish the day I figured. I go into the woods and there is a lot of tree cover. My gps is once again sending me in different directions. I must have had a dozen different gzs in a 5o foot radius. I have never seen so many possible hiding places in such a small area. It’s getting darker and the rain is just starting. I start looking under logs and in hollows. I’m searching quickly so I don’t get caught in a downpour. Now I start stumbling and tripping over everything and fall down. I grab a hold of what looks like a nice sturdy branch to help pull myself up with, then it suddenly breaks. What happened next was not real pretty. I felt a burning sensation on my back. I stop to scratch it and find out that I tore open a bees nest. Little buggers, but they carried big bats. Bigger than a house fly but smaller than a honey bee. Dark and fuzzy. I don’t know what kind they were. Anyway, my shirt comes flying off as I try to keep them away by swinging it around. As I go running from the woods, I’m going through thorns and raspberry canes and two different kinds of burrs. I’m all scratched, stung and bloody running down the middle of the road for my truck. I can only imagine what kind of sight it must have been. Went back a few days later to finally find the cache. Quite nervously I might add.

Well, I guess it will be a while before someone logs my A Carol for Papr Dolls as memorable.

There was a Puzzle Tour planned for this Saturday, to have a mass FTF on it. The high water proves to be a major challenge, and hazard. So it will have to wait.

Otherwise, once this is done, it will be interesting to see who…….
