Which do you suppose is the most satisfying geocache find: The first find, the 100th fins, the 500th find, the 600th find, or the 1000th find? Maybe it’s not even the number of the find?
11/03/2003 at 1:33 am #1745852I think its the first. You are so pleasantly surprised that you have found “treasure” with the aid of a very complex device of which you were sure you could never operate.
However as you hit the milestones, you are able to put something back into geocaching, your experience, stories and encouragement to others.
I think back to how I did it when I began geocaching and just chuckle.
So thanks wikidmilk for teaching me the various functions of my garmin while hiding a cache together. Thanks JThorson for showing me how to use the find feature and how best to use it. Thanks Kbraband for showing how to enter waypoints on the fly.
Thanks Natloh2 for showing me how to interface the compass and the gps. Thanks Trudy & the Beast for encouraging me. Thanks Pharmteam for helping me make my caches better and sharing your stories.
And a host of others who make this whole geocaching experience a “family” event.
Of course not having 600 caches to judge by, perhaps that is that is the one where you get naked from joy and run around the woods – come to think of it I did not see Socko for a while after he scored his 600th…………..11/03/2003 at 2:38 am #1745853Numbers are interesting, but satisfaction for me is when I am introduced to a location unlike any other that I have been previously. I also find satisfaction in gaining knowledge of local history, and having to adjust my way of thinking in order to locate a cache. Caching has introduced me to more of the sights of Wisconsin than many see in a lifetime. That is satisfaction for me!
11/03/2003 at 3:02 am #1745854For a while, I got caught up in the numbers. Now I wouldn’t care if they were dropped! I’d rather see them go the route that Navicache is doing. Asigning points rather than numbers. To me the reward is quality of the cache theme, as in SBTT’s Glow in the Dark. Obviously scenery isn’t rewarding in the dark! And the most rewarding is being taken to a new and interesting place. I’ve found several of those that I continue to go back to and enjoy rather than trying to rack up numbers.

Waukesha11/03/2003 at 3:18 am #1745855Numbers are exciting, but the achievements made on a challenging hunt, the knowledge acquired by an educational hunt, or the thrill of an interesting hide make it exciting for us. We couldn’t tell you the number, but Devil’s Lake Revisited, Double Amputee cache, 2-N-1, and Glow in the Dark I & II were great experiences because of the challenge they provided or the interesting place we were brought to. We agree that we have been to so many places that we would never have found on our own, even here in Green Bay, had it not been for this sport.
In defense of the numbers, they do provide us with a goal to reach and a way to measure our progress. Perhaps this is a teacher thing, but we like being able to say, “Wow! Look what we’ve done!”

I enjoy looking at the numbers and seeing who is hitting milestones, but the bottom line is whether you can get out to find a half dozen every weekend or just a couple a month, as long as you’re enjoying the sport, every find is satisfying!
