My Saturday of geocaching turned into a day of doing four caches that I have done before. It all started last Monday I got a call from a Boy Scout leader in Stoughton asking if I could show the troop what geocaching is all about. There original plans were to go climbing at Boulders the cost was understood to be sixty dollars for the troop and it turned out to be per boy, change of plans! They had heard about me through a relative of mine, that’s when I got the call, can I show them geocaching, I agreed right off for Saturday, and then he informed me after I agreed, they would like to do a ten mile hike with the geocaching.
My brother in-law for Christmas is not going to get the artwork I had planed on giving him, a lump of coal may be to good for him.
Thirteen boy scouts and six adults and my self got together at the parking lot for Air Force One… cache GCF39A, I gave them a half hour go over of caching and at that point I handed off my GPSr to one of the scouts and we were off, they made quick work on the first find, lots of eager eyes make quick work of a find.
Next cache Gabriel’s cache GCB2D2, it had just become temporarily unavailable earlier in the week, I E-Mailed the owner to no avail, we marched on to Gabriel’s cache with intentions of repairing or replacing as needed. When we got in the area, the property owners were cleaning some brush near the cache, they new about the cache but were not asked to have it place on there property. I asked and got permission to replace the cache with a new container the old one was gone. Turned out he was a retired school principle and was excited to see so many boys out hiking and having a good time. The cache looks to be about ten feet on their side of the line from public property.
Next cache was Stoughton Bug House GCJGX4, if you have done this cache you will know getting to this one has more to it than most. The boys loved the adventure getting to the cache. One of the boys and his dad had done some internet research on caching and this one in particular, ecorangers had been there in the last week and dropped off two Travel Bugs and one in particular had piqued their interest and I was NOT going to leave with out that bug.
The last cache we found was Geocache GC6FA0, we made a game out of finding this cache one that Team Badger has used, when a person finds a cache they move away to a safe location and leave the area available for the next, it doesn’t work so well when a Scouts sees the cache and squeals, all heads turn and look at him, but it was so exciting to find a cache.
The last leg was two miles back to the parking location and a total of 10.14 miles.
All the boys used the GPS and I showed each how to use it, the screens showing how far they had hiked and how fast there average speed got the most use.
Don’t be surprised if we see a few new geocachers from Stoughton in the near future.

How fun is that?!?!??!! How nice of you to go out at last minute’s notice and give these boys a day of fun for scouting. And you’re a good teacher to boot, so I’m sure not only did they have fun, but they learned a lot as well!

Isn’t there some sort of “cacher of the month” award somewhere?!?!!?? It’s all yours!!

I would love to able to do something like that with my son’s cub scout den! The year’s schedule is all set up, but maybe a summertime activity….. I’ll give it some thought. I am open to suggestions for how to go about this.

Natloh2 – you get cacher of the month from me too!

Way to go Natloh2…glad that someone came to rescue the travel bug/s we had dropped on Wednesday. That travel bug cache in stoughton is not easy to get to. You need lots of balance. Sounds like everyone had a good time including yourself. Tami
