One of my caches I hid I made quite difficult to find. It’s a regular size container but it’s hidden very well. People complain that it’s frustrating to look for without a hint but I’m not clever enough to come up with a hint that will help without giving it away.

Any tips for writing good hints? Or if you want to be super helpful and will be in the Algoma area PM me.[/i]

My advice would be not to worry about what people complain about your caches, because if they don’t like them, they can go hunt something else or, better yet, go place some that they do like that everyone else can find.

With that said, I think you are talking about GC1XN32. Five finds and three DNFs on a D3 that’s only been out less than a month isn’t too bad. Why not let it percolate for a while?

If you really want to give it a hint, without knowing how and where the cache is hidden, it’s hard for someone else to do. I’d recommend sending an email to one of the previous finders. Peach would probably be able to help.

I wouldn’t sweat it at this point. One thing I’ve been fortunate enough to get is what I call “nudges”. I did a bunch of the Seldom|Seen puzzles last month and after a few unsuccessful attempts I contacted the owner and described in detail what I saw, where I looked, my assumptions, etc. This verified I was at ground zero, that I looked in likely spots, etc.

S|S then would either highlight certain words or give me certain words to help guide me. I’m not ashamed to ask for help and I’m not sure if these users did the same or not. To me if you can describe what you’ve done, your assumptions, etc. the owner will understand where you’re stuck and be able to help. To just expect a gratis hint is out of the question on some of single stage caches.

If the hint gives it away, then why call it a D3. If they were all easy that wouldn’t be any fun. I don’t get whipped out about logging DNF’s for myself. It happens and it’s part of the adventure. Too far this is so far or I’d take a run – it’s tempting.

c’mon now, everyone say it with me, we’ve all decrypted it before…

    ” NO HINT NEEDED!” 😛

On a semi-serious note, is it covered with bark? You might be BARKing up the wrong tree is popular…. Is in a hole under the tree.. you might GOPHER it …

One of my top ones to read and try and find “It has magnetic properties..” I looked hard for a magnetic keyholder only to find a metal pill thingie on my 6th or 7th trip to gz.

I put GC1XN32 (Petersen Park) on my watchlist. If I get the chance, I’d love to take a crack at it. Probably not this weekend but before the snow falls.

As long as the cache is rated correctly, I don’t see any overwhelming need for a hint. A person seeking this cache should be able to determine that a three star difficulty isn’t going to just jump out at them like a one or even two star cache might. As gotta run has said…let this one simmer awhile and see how many repeat DNF’s you get. If cachers are routinely getting stumped, then think up something cryptic.

There are so many people out there who almost feel “entitled” to find every cache they set out to hunt.

Don’t let the negative opinions of others get to you as a cache owner. If you want the hunt to be a difficulty 3 and adding a hint would bring that difficulty down, please don’t change a thing!!

Being an owner of a few caches for a couple of years, I can tell you that the general public will complain about everything and anything. They complain that they are too easy. They complain that there’s goose poop around. They complain that your “coords are off”. They complain when the sky is blue and it should be raining.

They also complement you on a great hide. They complement you on taking the time to put out a new cache for them to hunt. They complement you for great coords. They log happy thoughts because the sky is blue and it’s sunny and warm.

Just shrug it off. If you know you have placed a good challenging 3-star difficulty cache then let it be 🙂

I wouldn’t worry about a hint. Went by the cache area on Monday, but the park guy was cutting grass so I decided to come back another day. Might be going down early this coming week delivering so I’ll make a run by and see if I can find it. If I do I’ll let you know.

I’ve been out plenty lately and only found 75% of them at most. 🙁 There were a few that if I didn’t read the hint I would have found faster. And of course I’ve got 2 different ones that I’ve spent a couple tries at and at least 30 min each visit and haven’t found. Doesn’t mean I’ll give up, just go back later with a little helper and see if I have any luck. Btw, really appreciate all your hides. 🙂

To hint or not to hint that is the question..lots of reasons to, lots of reasons to not…

If you want more finders, adding a hint may help, if you like to mess with people leave it as is. Eventually someone will probably put something in their log to help as well.. like “well I was at a 3 tree clump but that wasn’t it”…

Leave it if you want mess with people. I love reading logs where cachers bitch about wanting a hint like the most recent log on that cache.

Sounds like it’s a good hide.
