    Hi folks!

My friend GeoRon and I are going to the Milwaukee area for a few days of caching next week. We were going to head up Friday, but decided to postpone it several days due to the weather. By the way, how much snow DID you guys get? (YIKES!)

Anyway, we’d love suggestions for good cheap eats and “must do” caches. We’re really looking forward to visiting the area, and if you ever visit the SW suburbs of Chicago, be sure to drop me a note!

Thanks in advance for your help!

    John

Oh yeah, we’ll be staying in Oak Creek.

    Hi John and Carol,

I am not from Milwaukee myself, so others on this forum can no doubt post a more authoritive list. However, when visiting Milwaukee, I can tell you which were my personal memorable caches.

First, take a look at Trudy and the Beast’s bookmark list of must do Milwaukee caches here: http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=8449da3b-b16c-49b6-8fc3-94b5e7d2174e

The most unique cache in Milwaukee is probably Covert Cache, GC3798 so be sure to check that one out. Very unique. Your mission is to be sure not to miss this cache!!!

Since you are in Oak Creek, you might like GCQMJT a cache on the Yellowstone Trail that I placed near some interesting historical buildings. The cache is in an unusual hidey hole.

GCJG3X is just south of Oak Creek, and offers a great view of Lake Michigan.

GCHTX0 is just north of Oak Creek, and is a fun multi, in a great park.

And if ya like weird and unusual stuff (and really, who doesnt) check out GCFFF6 and GCFFFA and GC9EF4. All 3 take you to places that are hard to believe.

Hey, didn’t we meet you in Racine a few months back? I think you told us about this cache then. Thanks for reminding me, and good to “see” you again!

Thanks very much everybody! I have almost every one of these caches on our route now.

How about some suggestions on good places for cheap eats?

Also, the best meal my wife and I ever had was in a bar/steak place in Milwaukee. It was about 15 years ago, and we still talk about it. The name of the place was something like Fitzgerald’s (I think). Anybody know what I’m talking about?

    Thanks again,

    John

There was a Fitzgerald’s in the Ramada Inn on 6th and Michigan. The restaurant is still there but under a different name. If that is the one your talking about. If your in the downtown area Sobelmans is a tavern that has excellent burgers. It is in the area of 18th and St. Paul. Don’t know the exact address.

OK, here are some ideas for food in Milwaukee County.

Italian – Our top recommendation is DiCarlo’s Trattoria in Oak Creek (42 53.450 87 54.733). They have the best pizza in town and outstanding pasta dishes. You will definitely want to go again if you try it.

Mexican – I would recommend Botanas (43 01.366 87 55.000) for Mexican American and Riviera Maya (43 00.233 87 54.233) for more authentic Mexican. At Botanas, try the Costillas de Chile Pasilla. At Riviera Maya, try the Tortas or the Moles.

    Burgers – We like Beer Belly’s (42 57.566 87 55.033).

Vietnamese – You probably would like Vientiane Noodle Shop (43 01.300 87 57.416). They serve a variety of cuisines from SE Asia (Vietnamese, Laotian, Thai, Cambodian).

Fish Fry – If you are in town on Friday, you can try the fish fry at Kegel’s Inn ( 43 01.005 87 59.166). Go EARLY as it gets ridiculously crowded after 5.

Greek – You can’t beat Oakland Gyros (Right next door to Beer Belly’s) for gyros, souvlaki, and greek chicken.

Can’t help you with Fitzgerald’s. I can’t believe it was the restaurant in the Ramada.

    Almost forgot another great place!

Eastern European – While not cheap, Ilija’s Place (42 57.500, 87 51.450) is definitely worth a stop. When you walk through the door, you will be find yourself in a neighborhood restaurant like you would find in Sarajevo or Zagreb. The Venison Goulash is not to be missed if they haven’t run out by the time get there. Julie especially likes the Veal Shank. If you go at lunch, you can get by for under $10. One warning: like much of Eastern Europe, a large percentage of the clientele here are smokers. They do have a non-smoking section, but some of the smoke does drift in.

You guys are great! We’ll be on our way early afternoon on Thursday to pick up a bunch of caches and drop a little $$ into the local economy for a few days. The weather looks superb!!
