This is the fundamental difference between some puzzle creators and others. I too, do not create puzzles to drive cachers crazy. Some of you may disagree because you have been driven crazy, but know that is it not the purpose of my caches.
I’ll admit that some of the puzzle ideas that come to me can be cryptic, examples would be “My Left Ear is Right”, “FIN is for Finish” or “Hyde’s Web” where the logic and means of solving the puzzle is not readily apparent. I do try to sprinkle in enough clues to get you moving in the right direction. I also tend to revisit them after the FTF and add a clue or two, just as many puzzle cache creators do.
But beyond the puzzle itself, I am trying to show you something new or present information about a topic you might know little about. I found the number of country abbreviations (and associated numerical UN codes) fascinating and wanted to share that in the form of a puzzle – “FIN is for Finish”; I thought the “Deutch Effect” was very cool and wanted everyone else to experience that interesting audio phenomenon – “My Left Ear is Right” (use your balance knob); I wanted to introduce cachers to aspects of Aerial photography where man-made objects resemble other things (like a web) that most of us just glance over – “Hyde’s Web” and other Nadar caches. For none of these caches did I even begin with the premise “how difficult can I make this puzzle” and “how long will it take for someone to solve it”. In fact, I usually find myself struggling with how difficult they might be and trying to find ways to make them a bit more accessible without taking all the fun out of solving them.
MY INTENT IS NEVER TO CREATE A PUZZLE THAT IS SO CRYPTIC that it can’t be solved without asking me directly for help. I actually get uncomfortable with a puzzle that goes unsolved for more than a day or two because it tells me I may have made it too difficult. This is also the reason why I feel like getting to the solve without inventing time into solving it, time that leads to discovery, short-changes you on what the owner’s intent of the puzzle was and you miss out.
In case y’all weren’t paying attention, seldom just layed out the solves for a whole mess o’ puzzles above!

But don’t fret, I haven’t worked all that hard either. There are others out there I’ve been cracking lately.

Yeah, the joking around is fine but doesn’t it make sense to keep that to the forums rather than through the main resources of the WGA site? Is that type of “annoucement” the thing that’s going to get people jazzed about the association?

I tried to ask one of the “creators” about the event and got no reply at all – not even a disclaimer, so I was even more curious. So, it turns out it was cancelled after all? Too bad, I’m sure that group could have taken us to some places we have never gone before…..

I had the bogus link taken down. I laughed at the joke but as a joke it belongs in the forums not in the official WGA annoucements. It could only have been approved…or put there…by a BOD member, which is…interesting.
On the Left Side of the Road...I for one was hoping it was a real event. After looking at the puzzles of the people who supposedly holding this event I thought it would be a great way to learn from some of the most unique puzzle creators in the state. So not only is the joke a pain in the butt for the people who where supposedly holding it, but it is also for us who would have been interested in attending.
I guess I was mostly curious and not really that interested in a tour on the topic. I hate getting trampled when I’m trying to make a find. Perhaps some “higher power” was trying to encourage people to “lighten up” a bit? It is supposed to be fun after all……

On a slightly related note…
A few weeks prior to all this business about solving puzzles or not and tours I was thinking it would be fun to put on an event to teach others how to place new puzzle caches (rather than solving/finding them).
It would be pretty informational because a. It would teach traditional cache placement techniques – location, permission, container choice, getting coords b. It would teach things like determining bogus coords and other puzzle specific cache creation topics. C. It would cover submitting the cache page including some simple html tips (which is almost always necessary for puzzle caches) and how to place pictures in the gallery and then reference them on the page (so cachers dont have to “go into the gallery” or view them from photobucket which is blocked by one of my internet sources and really annoying) D. It would cover creating geochecker and evince checkers and putting them on the cache page.
It would be pretty simple to either create a brand new cache or recreate the steps to making one that already exists (or is in the works) in front of an audience while showing tips and tricks that have been learned from experience.
I think this would interest not just people who might want to try hiding a new puzzle cache but also those looking to solve them. Reason being is they would see the puzzle process “from the other side” so to speak. They might hear a tip or 2 from “my perspective” on creating new puzzles that will certainly help in solving puzzles (mine and others out there).
Feedback? Worth putting together?
I certainly would not mind putting on “a class” if there was enough interest out there. Perhaps it might spark new interest in some creative people out there to place a few new ones that I would get to go find 🙂
