❓ need any info about megellan meridian gold I found one for about 120 is this a upgrade from my e trex legend or should I save up for a garmin e trex legend cx
02/12/2007 at 2:28 am #1770112Get a hold of Bushwhacking Queen via her profile on GC.com. I know she uses one! Other than that I kow she likes it and I loved my Magellan SporTrak Pro when I was using it. A bit frustrated with the new eXplorist 500 though.
02/12/2007 at 3:01 am #1770113Ecorangers and The Tapps both use the Magellan Gold/ Color models. Magellan has discontinued the Meridan line for the newer Explorisit line.
They are slower in zeroing down than the new Garmin models but they do zero quite nicely.
They use a serial connector versus the newer USB which means the upload is a bit slower.
You can buy software that does the road auto-navigation for the Magellan units. It routes very comparable to my Garmin when the units are side by side.
02/12/2007 at 5:39 pm #1770114We also use a Magellan Meridian Gold.
There is a yahoo forum for it as well:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Magellan_Meridian/
it has a very good FAQ and there are many knowledgable members. It is probably the best place for info since Magellan provides basical no support, even when it was supported.
02/12/2007 at 10:24 pm #1770115$120 seems steep for a discontinued unit. I think that’s what I paid two years ago for my gold. But then I have not surfed the sales to know otherwise. I like my gold….it’s easy to use, the screen is big, the kids can use the buttons. It has flaked on my twice now, with all data just evaporating into the stratosphere….one time was just when we finished caching for the day. What burned me was that if we had not just finished, we would have just finished! No support from Magellan. However, I am not planning on upgrading, despite this problem.
02/13/2007 at 2:37 am #1770116The Magellan series Meridian is GREAT!! I started with a magellan explorist 100. NO GO!! After recieving I found it had no download and bought the GOLD Meridian. I sold my water RC units to pay for it! It was worth it. Now with the COLOR it doesn’t seem to do better than the GOLD. The color screen is nice. They both work great and I will look at the next Generation!
The Tapps02/13/2007 at 2:46 pm #1770117I have a meridian Gold, actually two, and I do enjoy them. I purchased MapSend DirectRoute software off the internet at a deep discount and install various maps on my SD cards depending on the area I am traveling to. Though the DirectRoute will give you turn-by-turn directions (EarthAngel of ecorangers utilizes that aspect of the software per her logs), I use it primarily for the defined street maps which is better than the other MapSend software.
If you have specific questions and would like to email me, please contact me through my profile on the geocaching website.
Where did you find one for $120? It would be worth it for me to pick up another! 😮
02/21/2007 at 5:46 am #1770118Our Meridian Gold has been from one end of the country to the other. It is fantastic. I won’t leave home without it. We’ll probably upgrade eventually, but that is awhile off. Good stuff!
