I just got around to reading yestedays paper and discovered an ad from Aldi’s.
They are selling Garmin Foretrex 101’s for $99 for anyone interested. Thats $50 off retail, and $25 off e-Bay price.
09/12/2006 at 12:01 am #1765464Gander Mountain also had an E-Trex legend for $99 in yesterdays paper.
09/12/2006 at 12:40 am #1765465Dick’s Sporting had a eTrex for $99 also, it’s the yellow one. The Gander Mountain is a Refurbished eTrex Legend w/ 1 year warranty.
09/12/2006 at 12:50 am #1765466Are each of those downlaodable?? I have heard of some of the Garmin.. (lower end).. that you can’t downlaod WPTs too.

All are downloadable (yellow eTrex, eTrex Legend, and Foretrex 101). The yellow eTrex and Foretrex don’t come with the download cable, so you’ll have to spend another 5 or 10 bucks on a serial cable to download waypoints.
If the Foretrex isn’t a refurb, this is a really good price and I’ll probably try to pick up a backup unit.
09/12/2006 at 1:13 pm #1765468I’ve heard rumors of a new cheap model garmin with a sirfIII chip. it was rumored to be out around xmas, though who knows if there is any truth to the rumors.

Of all the GPSrs I have seen in the field, the Legend seems to be one of the more popular models. (which I use.) It’s fairly cheap, does basic mapping, and holds 1000 waypoints which is more than enough. Plus it’s pretty durable, as mine went flying off the top of a van going 55 and still survived.
09/12/2006 at 1:44 pm #1765470My legend is on the fritz. Rubber around edge is torn and held together with black electrical tape. Screen goes blank or gets funny lines on it from time to time. $99 is the same cost as Garmin charges for the repair. I might have to pick one up!

Must be a common Legend problem. You’ve described mine exactly (except for the electrical tape.)

Bob’s too…only with scotch tape. He’s had it for years, and used it for hunting, fishing, and Geocaching. Lot’s of miles and activity!
10/09/2006 at 8:41 pm #1765473Best thing I ever bought. I also bought the protective case for it — so hopefully I can ward off the duct tape for a while…

I decided today to finally check out the $99 foretrex at aldi’s…. well it was marked $99 but it rang-up $69. the person working their said they just lowered the price. after playing with it for a few hours it seems to be pretty accurate, hold lock very well. definitely worth the money.
10/10/2006 at 8:58 pm #1765475This would appear true everywhere … if you call corporate they indicate the item is selling for $69.99 Now if I could figure out an excuse why a guy that caches as little as I do needs 3 GPSrs.

If I could find the dang things, I would buy one (even though that would be like GPS number #8 or #9… I lost count). 🙂 I love my Foretrex and would like a mate for it, but I went to three Aldi’s in the Milwaukee area and they were all gone. I think people are buying them and then selling them for a profit on eBay…

I found mine in monroe, so a small town may be your best bet at finding one. I now have three gpsr including the new one, so I’m sure my girlfriend is wondering why I need so many. I did give her my legendC after my purchase, maybe that will keep me out of the dog house.
I just looked on tigergps and see the data cable is $10 for the foretrex, so I can add that to the cost at some point. -
