I haven’t gone into the clayjar cache-rating-assistance link to assign a D/T rating for a while, but I heard something about it so I went out to check since we have a lot of river and island caches.

The “specialized equipment” factor no longer qualfies a cache for a T5 rating. So if you have a short hike, on paved pathways, flat with no overgrowth (as it would be from the car to the boat launch) it’s going to come back as a T1 even if you check “special equipment.”

If you check “no trail” (I guess…the river is not a trail?) you end up with a T4.

Obviously you can assign any T rating you want, but the system no longer suggests an automatic T5 for boat caches, as far as I can tell.

Actually, I thought you were talking about the rating system built in to gc.com. I took a look and that one actually has no place to indicate special equipment at all.

Yeah there is. Go into the edit cache page, where you can choose the D and T ratings.

Click the link for “try this system.”

That page is different than the last time I looked (which is ???)

There is a radio button for: “Finding this cache requires very specialized knowledge, skills, or equipment. This is a serious mental or physical challenge.”

Checking this box has no impact on the T rating of the cache when I try it. In other words, keep all the other radio buttons “easy,” then check that button, and you will end up with a D5/T1 cache! So, the specialized equipment now factors into the D rating, not the T.

Even checking the “steep elevation” box with this box will only get you a T4. So mountain climbing or rapelling is a T4 without adding in anything else regarding the trail or terrain.

Now, to make it more confusing, if you read the descriptions that come up, you will see that T5 caches are still supposed to be “Requires specialized equipment and knowledge or experience, (boat, 4WD, rock climbing, SCUBA, etc) or is otherwise extremely difficult.”

    BUT…putting that in the rating system…gets you a 1.

Anyhoo, play around with it and you’ll see what I mean. It is weird.

Now of course you can just ignore this and put in whatever you want, but this seems to be a little off.

Does this mean cachers are going to have to READ the cache page to gleem pertinent info like “Boat required” now as it won’t be reflected in the T5 rating????? That’ll make some cachers happy. 🙄
