You know, if this is our biggest problem as an organization, we’re in pretty good shape. I am not saying this blithely to belittle the many strong and valid opinions here; it’s simply an observation that an issue of “branding” seems to be the one that generates the most passion at the moment.

I’m currently sitting as president of another board, and we’re in the midst of grappling with this very thing. It’s an interesting process and one which will never make everyone happy. Although the whole situation here, as the current board admits, could have been better handled, they did act based on the process set forth. Lessons have been learned, which in the end is the most important thing.

Now, would you believe?….the logo currently being tweaked for my other organization involves a cow. This is a multi state organization, but at least it meshes with the organization’s tag line. Fortunately, that board has been charged with this job and we don’t have to put it to a vote. We simply have to field all the B & M that comes later! I appreciate that the WGA Board has openly accepted responsibility for this process, the good stuff and the not so good. Thank you for that!

Thanks for the inside track on the BOD deliberation that stalled the logo decision for the last half of the year. I suspected this was the cause of the languishing final board vote on the logo. Again, thanks for sharing GrouseTails, I appreciate your candor.

If all the BOD invested was $100 and you were presented with 20 variants, then you did just fine. It would have been nice to see a more contemporary palette than this final version presents. Some might say it’s camo, but it isn’t (that would require a nonuniform pattern to break up the silhouette), some might say it’s earthy, which it is and maybe that fits. It just isn’t as strong a logo as we could have ended up with by, color, design or impact.

I don’t think the conversation can go anywhere but backward at this point. Unless the logo does prove to be an issue with WA, which I suspect it won’t or if the WGA body asks for a re-count, en masse, which I suspect it won’t or if a member of the BOD pushes to revisit the logo, which… you get the idea.

If this issue was making the BOD nauseous 6 months ago, this thread has them hugging the bowl, tightly… must be the canned worms.

You know… i thought the logo looked pretty good when looking at it at work and then I got home and my home monitor does it absolutely no justice. In fact it looks like crud on this monitor. Interesting…

Wonder if the color is off on my junky home monitor.

Just goes to prove “It might be good enough to WORK, but not to geocache with”

    Sorry for the sick humor

You know, I am having second thoughts, and now think Obama should not be president.

What are we going to do about it????

Hmmm. I wonder if anyone out there see the analogy?

I would like to add one idea to this thread. When you post something in a WGA forum (or any other public forum), it would be good if you could avoid insults, sarcasm, inflammatory language, and accusations of incompetence, ignorance, malfeasance, or laziness against other members of the organization. For this forum to be effective, it is necessary that we all respect the opinions of those we disagree with. Remember that things put in writing will always lack the nuance that can be employed with “in person” communication. Anything you write that can be taken harshly will be taken harshly. It doesn’t matter that you meant something as a joke or were just being overly dramatic. People will take what you say literally. We are all friends here, and there is no reason be disrespectful.

I don’t see anything in the two pages of comments that is disrespectful or inflammatory. I do see direct and pointed criticism. But, when one agrees to take on the responsibility of being part of “running things,” one has to be willing to take that criticism.

I Did vote not to have this New Logo Put in Place. I felt that it, along with the submissions from the artist were still too close to the Washington State Geocaching Association. I personally did not see a need to change the Logo that we Had. I was one of Two that Voted No to the New Logo Design, but Majority Wins out in all elections. We will now go forward with the logo that was selected by the masses.

But the new “Brown LOGO” is not what was chosen by the masses.

Why wasn’t the old current logo not an option or choice in the first round of voting?

This logo design contest was drawn out much longer then I anticipated. The months of anguishing over a decision was mostly because this logo was so similiar to Washington State. In fact, when we contacted Washington State to get their thoughts on the logo, they frowned on our new choice.

just gotta know, they frowned, but did they scream copyright infringement?

is the WSGA logo copyrighted, is the WGA (old or new) copyrighted?

I understand your concern. In our initial contact with Washington’s association, they did express concerns. In a followup email we got this response:

    >>>>>>>>>
    Quote:
I don’t have a problem with it, and I don’t believe the rest of the board
will either. We’re all in this for the same thing

We have been thinking of putting a variation of your Cache Rescue project up
for our members. It’s just been a matter of getting the code written.

    >>>>>>>>>>
    Stop quote.

The other factor to consider is that there is literally nothing new under the sun when it comes to any logo. Any design that could possibly be developed, would share some similiarity with something else.

The Washinton logo is not copyrighted, and neither is ours.

This logo issue is really a very smal issue, and I see no point in trying to make it into a big deal.

Just for fun, take a look at the controversy around the new Pepsi logo, which cost Pepsi over a million bucks.

    See http://www.odwyerpr.com/blog/index.php?/archives/365-Pepsis-New-Logo-Has-a-Familiar-Feel.html

    And then see http://willitbrand.blogspot.com/2008/10/pepsis-embarrassing-grin.html

My point here is that no matter how much you think a particular logo is unique, it is not. Pepsi probably didnt think their smiley logo would remind some people of Obama and butt cracks, yet it does. Any design is gonna look like someone else’s design and remind people of something not anticipated.

In the end, I think we have to accept the fact that there is no “perfect” logo, that everyone would be happy with. We ended up with a logo as good as we could get, knowing fully well that it is simply not possible to make everyone happy on this one, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and art is totally subjective.
